The penultimate Grade One on the card at Woodbine this Saturday comes in the form of the G1 Summer Stakes. This race will present an opportunity with the winner to line up in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf, and it will be contested over a mile.
Before Betting On Summer Stakes
The Grade One action comes thick and fast at Woodbine this weekend, with the penultimate top-level contest on the card in Canada coming in the form of the G1 Summer Stakes. This race will cover a distance of a mile on the turf, with the horses competing for their share of the $400,000 purse. The winner will secure their spot in the G1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf.
As is the case with many of the races at Woodbine this weekend, Charlie Appleby will likely have the favorite in the betting in the form of Al Qudra. The two-year-old will be the ride of William Buick, and he has won twice from five career starts. He will be making his first start in North America this weekend after landing the Pat Edderly Stakes at Ascot at the end of July.
Cairo Caper could be a leading hope for the home team in Canada this weekend. The Nathan Squires-trained runner has won on each of his two previous starts, most recently scoring over course and distance to take the Soaring Free Stakes at the end of last month. Big chance on the strength of his Woodbine record this weekend.
Mark Casse has a strong hand for the Summer Stakes this weekend, with Dream On likely to be his leading chance at the prices. However, Vixen could be an unexposed type that could be suited by Woodbine on Saturday. The two-year-old got off the mark at the second attempt at Ellis Park last month, and there could be reason for optimism surrounding his chances this weekend.

Appleby’s Al Qudra got the better of New Century over seven furlongs at Ascot in July, but we could see that form being reversed over a mile this weekend.
Oisin Murphy will take the ride on the Andrew Balding runner, who was last seen in great form winning over a mile at Salisbury at the start of August. His experience over the distance could be vital in this company, and further improvement could make him the one to beat.
