The big Group One in Europe this weekend promises to be a fascinating clash between British, Irish, and French runners at Longchamp. The G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp will have an impact on the Breeders’ Cup Mile betting, but which runner will further their claims in France on Sunday?

Before Betting On Prix du Moulin de Longchamp

The Prix du Moulin de Longchamp is a significant race on the French racing calendar, with horses aged three and older competing over a mile at Longchamp. This race has been won by some greats throughout modern history, including Goldikova in 2008, Ribchester in 2017, and Baaeed in 2021.

Roger Varian’s Charyn looks set to go off as the favorite this weekend, as the four-year-old has progressed excellently during the 2024 season. He was a winner at the Royal Ascot meet when finishing over two lengths clear of Docklands in the G1 Queen Anne, before following up with a dominant showing in the G1 Prix du Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard Jacques le Marois to win by three lengths from Metropolitan.

British Classics are represented in the race this year, with G1 1,000 Guineas winner Notable Speech set to line up for the Charlie Appleby team. The three-year-old has been near-perfect on track throughout the season, with his only blemish coming when seventh in the G1 St James’s Palace Stakes. However, a solid response came at Goodwood in the G1 Sussex Stakes when reaching an RPR rating of 124.

Aidan O’Brien’s yard will be represented by Henry Longfellow on Sunday. He was last seen finishing fourth behind Notable Speech in the G1 Sussex Stakes, but was ahead of the same rival when second behind Rosallion in the G1 St James’s Palace Stakes. Cruically, the three-year-old has experience at Longchamp when beaten in the G1 Poule d’Essai des Poulains in May.

This is a star-studded renewal of the Prix du Moulin de Longchamp this weekend. I’ve been trying to get Charyn beat all season, and the weight pull in favor of Notable Speech makes the Godolphin runner the standout bet. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Kelina run well at a big price, with the filly running well behind Mqse De Sevigne over a mile in Grade One company last time out, and having proven ability on good to soft ground at Longchamp.
