Before Betting On Franklin-Simpson Stakes

The Grade One feature on a multi-million dollar card at Kentucky Downs this weekend comes in the form of the G1 Franklin-Simpson Stakes. This race will cover a distance of six and a half furlongs, and horses aged three will be eligible to enter. A talented field of 12 will go to post, and cases can be made for many of the runners involved.

Mansa Musa will be considered a leading chance among many this weekend for the William Mott team. He has been campaigned over five and a half furlongs throughout this season, and is yet to finish outside of the first three. The colt was last seen finishing second in the G3 Quick Call Stakes, and further improvement is likely based on his efforts last season over six furlongs in the UK and Ireland.

Apollo Ten is another interesting contender this weekend. The three-year-old was the winner of the My Frenchman Stakes at Monmouth in July, before recording a career-high speed figure when claiming third in the Mahony Stakes. However, this will be a first attempt in graded company on Saturday.

George Weaver’s Please Advise has been knocking on the door in graded company this season, taking fourth in each of the G2 National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame and G3 Manilla Stakes on his last two outings. Evade also holds a progressive profile for Michael Maker on his first U.S. start. The three-year-old was a winner over seven furlongs at Epsom in May, before taking a creditable seventh in the G1 Commonwealth Cup.

Evade and Manda Musa both bring very strong form to the table this weekend, and they could hold solid claims of victory. However, the preference is for Hedwig. The three-year-old appears to have been pointed at this race from an early stage, and looked excellent at Ellis Park on his latest effort. It only boosts his chances that he has prior experience at Kentucky Downs after finishing second in the Juvenile Sprint Stakes last year.
