The Grade One action at Del Mar rounds off on Sunday with a potentially key race in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile puzzle. The Del Mar Futurity will be run over a distance of seven furlongs, with the field competing for their share of the $300,000 purse.
Before Betting On Del Mar Futurity
Eye-catching Grade One action in the U.S. this Sunday will come in the form of the Del Mar Futurity. This race has been a key prep race for legendary runners before Triple Crown targets in the following season, with the most significant winner coming in the form of American Pharoah in 2014. That was one of 14 victories recorded by trainer Bob Baffert, who sends three runners to the Del Mar Futurity this weekend.
Getaway Car could be the Hall of Famer’s best chance of victory this weekend, as the two-year-old has been very impressive on his two starts to date. He showcased himself in Grade Three company at Del Mar last month when setting a speed figure of 99 to win the Best Pal Stakes.
Gaming is another runner from the Baffert yard this weekend, with the two-year-old thrown into Grade One company after just one career start. However, there was plenty to like about his maiden success, reaching a strong opening speed figure of 94. Further improvement can’t be ruled out.
McKinzie Street is another runner making his second start in Grade One company this weekend, with the two-year-old representing the stable of Tim Yakteen. However, slight improvement will be required from his maiden win based on the figures after clocking a speed rating of 92.
Meanwhile, R Heisman boasts experience over this field, and the Peter Miller runner could be worth his shot in this company. The two-year-old has won twice from four career starts, and was last seen winning on his Del Mar debut in the Graduation Stakes.

Baffert’s record in this race is incredibly challenging to overlook, meaning that we likely expect the winner to come from his stable. Gaming could be the most progressive of his contenders this weekend, and even a small improvement from his maiden win will see him play a winning role based on the speed ratings already in the book.
