England and Senegal will lock horns for the first time ever on Sunday, as the nations look to book their spots in the quarterfinal stage at the World Cup. The Three Lions ended their group stage in strong fashion, and will be looking to reach the quarterfinals for the second straight edition of the World Cup.

Before Betting On England vs Senegal

The pressure remains on the shoulders of Gareth Southgate, and England fans will be hopeful that this is the tournament that they can finally get their hands on the famous trophy for the first time since 1966. The group stage saw two excellent England performances, and one that was not nearly the standard required. England ended their group stage with a fine showing against Wales, with Marcus Rashford scoring an excellent brace to take his tally for the tournament to three.

The Three Lions may never have clashed with Senegal, but England has an excellent record against African opposition at the World Cup. They have never lost in seven previous matches, with four ending in wins, including a quarterfinal win over Cameroon at the 1990 tournament.

African nations also have a poor record against European opposition at the World Cup, as they have won just once in nine attempts. That win was Senegal’s 2-1 victory against Sweden at the 2002 competition. Senegal snatched second place in the group on the final matchday, as they recorded a 2-1 win against Ecuador.

That was a fine end to their group stage campaign, but whether they can stand up against some of the best footballing nations without Sadio Mane remains to be seen.

England’s record against African opposition is excellent, as they have never lost in their history, winning 14 of the previous 20. Southgate’s side may ultimately fall short in their goal to bring football home, but we expect them to make it through to the quarterfinals.
