The biggest game in the Champions League this week takes place at the Etihad, as Manchester City look to secure their passage through to the next round against French heavyweights PSG. Whichever team wins the fixture will make it through, while the other will have the wait until matchday six to secure their place.

Manchester City vs PSG Preview

City Current Group Leaders

Manchester City are currently sitting at the top of the group standings coming into this penultimate fixture in the group. Pep Guardiola’s side have won all but one of the games that they have played in the Champions League this season. Their only defeat came in the reverse fixture against PSG, as the French side ran out winners by two goals to nil. A victory for the English side will secure their passage through to the next round. They have been the highest scorers in the group to this point, as they have found the net on 15 occasions.

However, they have likely also allowed more goals than Guardiola would have liked, as they have conceded on seven occasions to this point. City won their last game in the competition 4-1 against Club Brugge at the Etihad. Phil Foden scored the first goal in that win, while further strikes were added in the second half by Riyad Mahrez, Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus.

Pochettino Likely To Be Center Of Attention

Mauricio Pochettino will likely be the center of attention of his return to England this week. That isn’t down to the fact that he masterminded a famous Champions League qualification for Spurs at the Etihad in the past, but largely down to the fact that he is the front-runner for the Manchester United job. The Argentine is reportedly very keen on taking the job at Old Trafford, and would be willing to leave PSG mid-season to take the job at United.

PSG still have a bit of work to do on the pitch to make the next round, as they have to win at least one of their last two games to reach the knockout rounds. They have a four point advantage over Club Brugge at present, but a victory for their rivals on Wednesday coupled with defeat for PSG would allow the Belgium side to qualify with a win in France against PSG on matchday six. PSG have the best defensive record in the group, and will be boosted by the 2-0 win that they recorded against City earlier in the campaign.

Recent Meetings

The win for PSG earlier in the campaign was their first victory against Manchester City in six meetings. City had won the previous three battles between the two sides, while the first two meetings were both draws.

Manchester City vs PSG Pick

PSG are pretty big outsiders to win this fixture on Wednesday. City have been excellent at home in the Champions League in recent seasons, and that is a pivotal factor coming into this game. For that reason, the hosts should take the points and make sure of their passage through to the next round.
