A night of celebration is set for Mexican Independence weekend on September 14, as one of the nation’s best athletes returns to the ring to defend his super middleweight titles. Canelo Alvarez will put his WBO, WBC, and WBA titles on the line in the latest chapter of the esteemed rivalry between the nations of Mexico and Puerto Rico in the ring.
It is undeniable that Alvarez is one of the best boxers in history, winning 61 of his 65 professional bouts to date. He has been the super middleweight champion since December 2020 after beating Callum Smith to claim the WBA, The Ring, and WBC titles.
Since then, he has successfully defended the gold against some of the biggest names in the division, including Gennady Golovkin, Caleb Plant, and Billy Joe Saunders. His most recent successful title defense came in Sin City in May when beating Jaime Munguia by unanimous decision.
Edgar Berlanga will be the latest star to try to dethrone Canelo in the super middleweight division. The 27-year-old has won all 22 of his professional bouts, with 17 of his victories coming by knockout. He is a former US Youth National champion, and gained a dominant record as an amateur after winning 162 times.
Since turning professional, he has continued to progress through the ranks, and a high-profile showdown with Canelo was on the cards after his stunning sixth-round stoppage against Padraig McCrory in Florida earlier this year.
