There is Breeders’ Cup Challenge action at Churchill Downs on Saturday, as a place in the Filly & Mare Turf is up for grabs. The Beverly D Stakes is set to be run over a distance of 1 1/8 miles, with fillies and mares aged three and older able to enter. A rundown of the leading contenders and latest offshore odds can be found here.

Before Betting On Beverly D Stakes

The race this weekend has drawn a very exciting field, and cases can be made for nearly all runners that are set to go to post. However, it will be Rougir that will head the betting. The Chad Brown-trained horse ticks a lot of boxes this weekend, including the fact that he is French-bred. No American-bred horse has won this in the previous ten years, and this four-year-old certainly looks to be heading in the right direction.

She started her campaign with victory in the G3 Beaugay Stakes, before competing to a high standard in Grade 1 company, finishing fifth in the G1 New York and fourth in the G1 Diana. She is a previous Group 1 winner from her time in France, and it only appears a matter of time before she makes that grade in the United States.

The most interesting rival this weekend is Irish-trained Lily Pond. Aidan O’Brien won this race last year, but the absence of Ryan Moore this weekend means that John Velazquez takes the ride. She finally landed a group success last time out, as she came out on top in the G2 Kilboy Estate Stakes. Her prowess over this distance makes her a standout contender.

A pair of US-bred runners are the two other main contenders. Princess Grace boasts some impressive Churchill Downs form, which includes a victory in the Mrs. Revere Stakes last year. However, Family Way looks the most realistic contender after finishing ahead of Rougir in the G1 New York on her previous start.

This is such a competitive renewal of this race. However, Rougir’s pedigree certainly looks to be well suited to the race this weekend. She leads our fancies, and a +200 price with the leading Offshore sites looks fair.
