The Royals made a nice run to the top of the AL Central with wins in 10 of 13 games, but they’ve fallen off the pace of the Guardians a bit after two straight losses. One of those defeats came Thursday night at Minute Maid Park, where the Astros picked up a 6-3 victory to push their lead to 4 games in the AL West.

The series opening win was actually a big one for Houston, as they had lost six straight to the Royals. Houston had also dropped six of eight over the past couple weeks before stringing together a 10-0 win in Philadelphia on Wednesday to go along with Thursday’s victory over KC.

The Royals had a chance in game one, going up 3-2 in the 7th off of a 3-run double off the bat of Kyle Isbel but Houston did not fret and tallied a 4-run 8th inning to take the lead for good. The red hot Bobby Witt, Jr. was held to an 0-4 night as KC managed just 4 hits as a team, with Hunter Brown pitching into the 7th for the Astros while allowing just 2 hits.

Kansas City is the underdog Friday as Seth Lugo (14-8, 3.19 ERA) gladly makes his last start of August. He’s got a top 10 ERA in the league overall, but has a 4ER, a 7ER, and a 5 ER allowed outing over his last four starts to give him a 5.76 ERA for the month. Lugo started against the Astros back on April 10, giving up 2 ER over 6.0 IP in an 11-2 KC win.

Houston counters with Framber Valdez (13-6, 3.27 ERA) who they’ve had success with lately. The Astros suffered a loss in a Valdez start for the first time since June 18 when they fell 3-2 at Baltimore on Saturday – a stretch of 10 straight wins. Valdez has also held the MVP candidate Witt, Jr. to 1-9 (.111) in their head to head history.

August 30 Royals vs Astros Prediction & Pick

Thursday was a wild series opener with rallies and unearned runs but Friday should be more straightforward. Houston rarely loses with Valdez on the mound and Lugo looks like he may be suffering from arm fatigue as he’s been shaky late in the season.

Pick: Astros -1.5
