A couple of first place teams meet up at American Life Field when the Dodgers (69-49) and Brewers (67-50) begin a 4-game series that could foreshadow a postseason meeting. Los Angeles just completed a 4-2 home stand including a sweep of the Pirates over the weekend while Milwaukee had a 5-game win streak snapped in a 4-3 loss to the Reds on Sunday.

The Dodgers are 6-2 over their last 8 games but they do have to make the trek from the West Coast to the Midwest which can take some adjusting. Los Angeles is 20 games over .500, but neither Arizona (66-53) nor San Diego (66-53) seem like they are going anywhere as the Dodgers hold just a 3.5 game lead in the NL West. Every game is still critical for L.A. and may be through the end of the season.

Milwaukee is going to have an easier ride down the stretch as they’re up 7.5 games on the Cardinals in the Central. The Brewers have the 2nd best run differential in MLB (+106) but they’re also not slowing down picking up a sweep in Atlanta last week while outscoring the Braves 34-12.

Clayton Kershaw (0-2, 4.38 ERA) makes just his fourth start of the year on Monday after offseason shoulder surgery. Kershaw has yet to throw more than 85 pitches through his first three outings, but did go into the 5th on Wednesday while allowing just 1 ER to the potent Phillies offense.

The Brewers send Freddy Peralta (7-6, 4.02 ERA) to the hill in the series opener but he’s been slightly better on the road (3.66) compared to at home (4.40). Milwaukee has lost four of his last six starts, but did win 8-5 on Wednesday even though Peralta allowed 4 ER over 5.0 IP.

Kershaw can be kind of a wild card in this matchup as he’ll likely turn the ball over to the bullpen right around the 5th inning. Peralta had a rough outing his last time out, but he’s also allowed 2ER or less in two of his last four starts.
