A couple of top 25 teams battle it out near the Hawaiian shores as the #23 Texas Tech Red Raiders meet the #10 Creighton Bluejays in the opener of the Maui Invitational. This is both the first game away from their own court for both squads as well as the first time neither team has been at least a -14 point favorite so this is a real benchmark game for both programs.

Before Betting on Texas Tech vs Creighton

Texas Tech had a fairly easy non-conference schedule, blowing through Northwestern State 73-49, Texas Southern 78-54, and Louisiana Tech 64-55. That’s just fine for coach Mark Adams in his second season in Lubbock after a Sweet 16 berth a season ago, because he has a lot of new pieces to integrate into his lineup.

Gone from last year’s 23-8 regular season team are Bryson Williams and Davion Warren who have exhausted their college eligibility and are trying their hand at the NBA and Terrence Shannon, Jr. (Illinois), and Kevin McCullar, Jr. (Kansas) who have transferred. That’s the four top scorers from last season’s team.

Even though they lost a lot of scoring from last season’s team, Texas Tech’s calling card is their defense that ranked 14th in the country last year allowing just 60.7 ppg and is on an even better run this year at 52.7. That defense is going to be put to the test in the Texas Tech vs Creighton matchup as the Bluejays return five of their top seven scorers from a season ago and have transfer Baylor Scheierman who averaged 16.2 ppg last year at South Dakota State.

Texas Tech vs Creighton Prediction & Pick

This is your classic offense vs. defense matchup and also features an interesting battle on the inside with Creighton’s 7’1 Ryan Kalkbrenner meeting up with Texas Tech’s 6’11” Daniel Batcho who had six blocks last Monday in a win over Louisiana Tech. Ultimately though the Red Raiders not having enough familiarity with a multitude of new faces will be their downfall.

Pick: Creighton -4
