Shohei Ohtani is 6-2 with a 0.74 ERA. He posted a 1.08 ERA over four May starts. He allowed one earned run over his last 24 innings. Ohtani went seven innings against the Astros on May 5. The deepest outing of his season, and he came out with 10 strikeouts and nothing to show for the opposition. His FIP sits at 2.46, confirming the ERA is not smoke and mirrors.
The two-way conversation has largely stopped. Ohtani hits and pitches on the same days now. The Cy Young discussion is real. He has 67 strikeouts through 11 starts. The Los Angeles lineup behind him is built for exactly the kind of low-margin road games where one starter can carry a result: Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, and a lineup that ranked among the best in the NL all season. LAD is 42-24 overall and 20-12 on the road.
Jared Jones is 1-0 with a 4.82 ERA across two outings this season. He missed extended time and returned on May 29, going 4.0 innings against the Twins. His second start on June 4 was better: 5.0 innings, one run, a win over the Astros. The ERA is a two-start sample and the 4.82 number obscures real improvement between outings. His FIP of 5.08 tracks with a pitcher who is still working his way back.
Pittsburgh is 34-32 and has been playing competitive baseball. Bryan Reynolds and Andrew McCutchen give the Pirates lineup veteran run-scoring options. The home crowd at PNC Park and a genuine pitching talent in Jones give Pittsburgh a fighting chance in most games. Against Ohtani right now, that's a harder case to make.
