One of the world’s most prestigious races is set for Epsom this weekend, as the Oaks is staged. The British Classic is open to horses aged three, with the field completing a total distance of a mile and four furlongs.

Aidan O’Brien is typically dominant in Classics, and he has won three of the last five editions of the Oaks. Therefore, Amelia Earhart will be a standout chance. The three-year-old looked well-suited to being stepped up in distance on reappearance, easily winning the Cheshire Oaks by a widening two-length margin from the talented I’m The One. That prep is a tried and tested route, with last year’s winner, Minnie Hauk, following the same path.

Legacy Link is likely the standout of the British chances this Friday. The filly by Dubawi was emphatic in the closing stages when stepped up to a mile and two for the first time when landing the G3 Musidora at York. Bred to excel over further, and is respected for the John & Thady Gosden team.

If there is an improver in the field, then A La Prochaine could fit the mould. The three-year-old for Ralph Beckett was impressive when opening her account at Newbury last October, but she looked green when staying on better than most behind Amelia Earhart in the Cheshire Oaks. Unlikely to reverse that form, but could get closer.

Cameo gives Aidan O’Brien a strong second string this week. The Wootton Bassett filly was striking when winning the Lingfield trial in early May, easing clear to win by four lengths. Wayne Lordan has already achieved Classic success on the second string this season.

At the prices, K Sarra would be my second pick this weekend. The three-year-old looked like extra yardage would suit her when staying on strongly from the back of the field when third in the G3 Musidora behind Legacy Link. Will improve over further, and place claims at the very least.

Epsom Oaks Picks

There are few better target trainers than Joseph O’Brien. Thundering On looks like a red-hot chance after impressively winning the same trial that the 2024 Oaks winner won at Navan.

The filly cruised clear of the talented Emmeleia to win by three lengths, and the fact that Frankel has produced three previous winners of the Oaks shouldn’t be dismissed. Dylan Browne McMonagle is back aboard, and a serious challenge is expected this Friday.
