The Grade One action on the Belmont Stakes undercard gets underway with the G1 Just A Game Stakes, run over a mile on the turf. Chad Brown has dominated this race, with four of his record eight wins coming in the last four editions.
Therefore, Segesta should be respected this weekend. The five-year-old won impressively on her return to the track, landing the G1 Jenny Wiley Stakes from Expensive Queen. The daughter of Ghostzapper is a four-time winner in stakes company. However, her most disappointing run came when sixth in this race 12 months ago.
Sandtrap gives Brown a strong hand this weekend. The progressive four-year-old will be making her first yard for her new stable after leaving Ralph Beckett earlier this year. The Lope De Vega filly was an excellent performer in Europe, winning over seven furlongs at Salisbury, before being narrowly denied by Gezora in Group Three company. High-quality based on form.
John Velazquez will be aboard the Mark Casse-trained Classic Q on Saturday. The four-year-old has performed to a high standard this season, most recently winning the G2 Churchill Distaff Mile Stakes at the beginning of last month. Major player is backing up that effort.
Deep Satin and Buttercream Babe will need career-best efforts to feature in this race, while Fast Market looks to have too much to find. And One More Time could be an interesting outsider after winning on both of her career starts over a mile.
Just A Game Stakes Picks
Segesta will be hard to beat, but Francis Graffard is one of the best trainers in Europe, meaning Mandanaba should be a solid chance.
The four-year-old was impressive on her return to action, beating Godspeed in a listed race at Longchamp. Shares form lines with some of the dominant horses from last season, including when fourth in the G1 Prix de Diane. Could be overpriced at the odds.
