The final race on the Saratoga undercard before the attention switches to the Belmont Stakes comes on the turf, as the G1 Manhattan Stakes has attracted an international field.

However, the betting is headed by American-trained Rhetorical for William Walden. The five-year-old has been effective throughout his career, winning four of his six starts on the turf. He bounced back to winning ways in impressive fashion at Churchill Downs last month, beating the re-opposing Make Me King by three lengths in the G1 Turf Classic Stakes.

Make Me King could be an interesting chance to reverse that form after making his first U.S. start last month. The six-year-old looks exposed, but he has competed against some of the best turf horses in the world, including when beaten only three lengths by Ombudsman at Meydan in March.

Deterministic shouldn’t be overlooked this weekend after winning the Manhattan Stakes 12 months ago. The five-year-old has since returned to action with an impressive win in the G3 Fort Marcy. The Miguel Clement runner tends to save his best efforts for Saratoga.

Integration should be respected. The six-year-old has always threatened to be a high-class runner, and he was beaten by a head in this race 12 months ago. Test Score is also capable on his day, having won the G1 Pegasus World Cup Turf before underperforming when eighth in the G1 Turf Classic Stakes.

Manhattan Stakes Picks

French raider Bright Picture could be the value play this weekend. The Andre Fabre-trained runner holds some world-leading form lines, finishing second behind Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Daryz on return.

He also holds back-class after finishing within two lengths of the world’s highest-rated horse, Calandagan, on two efforts over a mile and two. If at the level of those runs, he could be very hard to beat.
