The 2026 FIFA World Cup gets underway in Mexico next week, and all nations will be dreaming of reaching the final at MetLife Stadium. However, only two teams can play their way throughout the tournament and reach the world’s most famous match.

Unsurprisingly, we believe that the odds could be right for the first of the World Cup finalists this summer. Spain are the dominant force in European soccer, winning the EUROs in 2024 with their flair attacking style.
Unlike other European nations, they will be suited by the hot climate at the World Cup, with their possession-based style likely to fatigue their opponents. Spain will encounter no issues in Group H, as they will likely win all matches to top the standings.
The EUROs champions also have a straightforward route through the tournament, battling against the runner-up in Group J (potentially Austria) in the round of 32 before a round of 16 clash with either the second-placed team in Group K (Colombia) or L (Croatia or Ghana).
The quarterfinals could present Spain with their trickiest test, potentially facing the USA or Belgium. A heavyweight clash awaits in the semi-finals, with a matchup against either France, Germany, or the Netherlands.

Roberto Martinez’s Portugal are a nation that are constantly being underappreciated ahead of the World Cup. The team boasts a stacked roster of talent, including a midfield trio that will start for any nation in world soccer- Bruno Fernandes, Vitinha, and Joao Neves.
Portugal are already in winning tournament form, having bested Spain in last summer’s Nations League final. I fully expect Portugal to top Group K with a perfect record, before showdowns against a third-place team and likely the winner of Group B (likely Switzerland) set for the round of 32 and round of 16, respectively.
A fascinating battle with Lionel Messi’s Argentina could be set for the quarterfinals, before a meeting with either England or Brazil, most likely for the semi-finals.
