Race Preview

Multiple Grade Ones are set for a stacked undercard on Friday, as anticipation builds ahead of the 2026 Belmont Stakes. One of the most fascinating races comes in the form of the G1 New York Stakes, which is run over a distance of 1 3/16 miles on the turf.

A lot of the talk surrounding the race will focus on the pre-race favorite Gezora. The superstar filly was a dazzling winner of the G1 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf at the end of last season, but was ultimately disappointing on her first start for Chad Brown when second in the G3 Modesty Stakes.

The four-year-old is now in the care of Will Mott, but Brown sends four runners in his attempt to take down the runner that was previously in his care. Kathrynmarissa looks to be the standout of those after downing Gezora at Churchill Downs last time.

Portfolio Duration could be one of Brown’s most interesting contenders after finishing a neck second behind Classic Q in the G2 Churchill Distaff Turf Mile. This step up in trip is perfect for the daughter of Night Of Thunder.

Speed Shopper and Pretty Picture should both be respected following recent wins, while Irad Ortiz has opted to ride City Girl following back-to-back wins. Bellezza is a mare that I have always liked, and this return to Saratoga and drop in distance should be beneficial to her chances after finishing sixth in the G3 Orchid Stakes.

New York Stakes Picks

With all the narrative following the Brown fallout, it could be Graham Motion-trained Laurelin that is overlooked. The four-year-old is a two-time stakes winner, and was striking when winning at Saratoga last August. Likely needed her return effort when third in the G3 Beaugay Stakes, and should be primed to fire this Saturday.
