Can The Oaks/Derby Double Be Achieved in 2025?
Success in the two standout races across the big weekend at Churchill Downs is a rarity. Kenneth McPeek became only the third different trainer to accomplish the feat in 2024, joining legendary trainers such as Ben Jones and Herbert J. Thompson.
Brian Hernandez became the eighth jockey to achieve the accomplishment, and he was the first since Calvin Borel in 2009. However, the McPeek and Hernandez partnership marked the third time that connections had teamed up with the Oaks and Derby double.
If any trainer is to achieve the feat this year, then the smart money would likely be on Brad Cox. The trainer has the favorite in the Oaks, as Good Cheer could go off as one of the shortest-priced favorites for the fillies’ race in recent memory.
However, Cox is yet to saddle the first-past-the-post in the Derby, with Mandaloun awarded the race in 2021 following Medina Spirit’s disqualification. This year, he has one chance in the Derby. Final Gambit has been improving rapidly, and you can see our runner-by-runner guide for our rundown on his credentials.
Will The Kentucky Oaks & Derby Double Be Achieved in 2025?
If you have read through our picks for the big races this weekend, then you will see that we don’t expect the Oaks/Derby double to be achieved in 2025. However, we are against the shorter of the two Cox runners across the weekend, meaning that if his superstar filly Good Cheer does win the Oaks, then history may be on the horizon.
