Liberty Hope To Have A Better Showing Against The Storm
Following back-to-back losses against the Phoenix Mercury (106-91) and the Atlanta Dream (90-81), the defending champs defeated the Los Angeles Sparks 89-79 on Thursday night.
The Liberty’s offense featured a balanced attack, with four players reaching double figures. Natasha Cloud scored a team-high 23 points, along with seven assists and four rebounds on 7-for-12 shooting overall and a 3-for-6 effort from beyond the arc.
Sabrina Ionescu added 20 points, six rebounds, and six assists. Breanna Stewart logged 17 points, 14 rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
Despite their 5-13 record, the Sparks led 53-42 midway through the third quarter. Thanks to a 13-0 run and Ionescu scoring 10 straight points, New York outscored Los Angeles 32-18 in the period to take a 69-59 lead.
The Sparks trimmed the deficit to five points at the 3:30 mark. But Leonie Fiebich’s 3-pointer pushed the lead back to eight, securing the win for the home team.
Seattle Coming Off A Narrow Victory Over Atlanta
After dropping two of their previous three contests, the Storm edged the Dream by an 80-79 margin on Thursday night.
Nneka Ogwumike and Erica Wheeler were the headline performers for the Storm. Ogwumike registered a team-high 24 points, along with seven rebounds and three steals. She is now in seventh place on the league’s all-time scoring list.
Wheeler contributed 21 points, five rebounds, and three steals. She shot 9-for-17 from the floor and knocked down three of her five attempts from 3-point range.
In a game featuring nine ties and 25 lead changes, the outcome was not decided until the last possession. Seattle trailed 79-75 in the fourth quarter before Wheeler hit a 3-pointer with 32.1 seconds left to play.
Atlanta had a chance to put the game away, but Maya Caldwell missed a 3-pointer. Seattle capitalized, as Skylar Diggins (11 points on 4-for-12 shooting) hit the game-winning layup with 3.4 seconds left in regulation.
The Storm won the rebounding battle by a sizeable 46-24 margin and turned 16 Atlanta turnovers into 21 points.
