French Open: Today’s Third Round Picks (May 30)

Today’s French Open Picks

Karen Khachanov vs. Tommy Paul

Two seeded players lock horns in the third round, as American Tommy Paul takes on Karen Khachanov. Paul has already been involved in some marathon matches, which includes an astounding comeback success after trailing two sets against Marton Fucsovics on Wednesday.

The American will be playing in the third round at Roland Garros for the second straight year. Karen Khachanov was also taken to his limit in the previous round, needing all five sets to overcome Sebastian Ofner.

The Russian made seven double faults, which will need to be amended on Friday. However, he has a slight advantage this week based on his past performances on clay, reaching at least the last eight at Roland Garros on two occasions since 2019. 

Frances Tiafoe vs. Sebastian Korda

An all-American showdown is set for the third round at Roland Garros, as Sebastian Korda and Frances Tiafoe lock horns. Korda has come alive on the clay surface at the French Open this year, and he eased through to this stage of the competition after a dominant straight sets win over compatriot Jenson Brooksby on Wednesday.

The 24-year-old will be aiming to reach the fourth round at the major for just the second time. Tiafoe has been dominant at Roland Garros so far, as he is yet to drop a set in his two matches.

He eased through his second round clash with Pablo Carreno Busta, hitting nine aces and winning 83% of the points on his first serve. His ability on the clay makes him the standout selection on Friday. 

Clara Tauson vs. Amanda Anisimova

Clara Tauson is one of the brightest aspiring players on the WTA Tour, and she has raised her game on the clay surface at Roland Garros. All three of her previous Tour victories have been achieved on the hard courts, but she showcased her ability in the previous round after landing a dominant straight sets win over Arantxa Rus.

However, American star Amanda Anisimova has been the eye-catching performer across the opening week.

The 23-year-old is yet to drop a set and was near-faultless in her second-round win against Viktorija Golubic. She has plenty of previous form in the book on the clay, including when reaching the final four in 2019.  -190

Jelena Ostapenko vs. Elena Rybakina

A heavyweight clash in the third round of the women’s competition will see two former Grand Slam champions collide. Jelena Ostapenko has been forced to battle through the opening two rounds, once again needing all three sets to see off an unseeded rival in the form of Caroline Dolehide in the previous round.

The Latvian is a former champion at Roland Garros, but she hasn’t made it past the third round since her victory in 2017. Elena Rybakina has been incredibly consistent at Grand Slam events since winning Wimbledon in 2022. She has reached at least the quarterfinals in four majors since, which included a run to that stage at Roland Garros 12 months ago.

She has looked back to her best this week, and it could be hard to bet against her after a dominant showing against Iva Jovic on Wednesday.
