French Open: Today’s Second Round Picks (May 28)

Today’s French Open Picks

Danielle Collins vs. Olga Danilovic

American contender Danielle Collins will be in action at Roland Garros on Wednesday. The 31-year-old was excellent in the opening round, as she battled to a straight sets win over Jodie Burrage. However, the fact that she has progressed from just two of her last seven appearances in the second round at the French Open would be a concern.

Olga Danilovic upset the odds in the first round after overcoming 27^th seed Leylah Fernandez in straight sets. The 24-year-old player comes alive on the clay, evident from her run to the Open de Rouen final in April. The Serbian could be the value play. 

Dayana Yastremska vs. Diana Shnaider

An even contest in the women’s French Open second round is set on Wednesday. Ukrainian player Dayana Yastremska overcame Destanee Alava in dominant fashion in the first round, winning in straight sets and dropping just six games.

The 25-year-old reached the third round for the first time at Roland Garros last year, but she boasts a win rate of just 29% at the Grand Slam. Eleventh seed Diana Shnaider came through her opening round encounter in straight sets. The progressive 21-year-old has a 33% win rate at Roland Garros, and will have fond memories of the court after winning the silver medal at last summer’s Olympics.

Jenson Brooksby vs. Sebastian Korda

An all-American affair is set in the second round of the men’s draw on Wednesday. Jenson Brooksby has excelled on the clay already this year after winning the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship. However, he is yet to reach the third round at the French Open.

Sebastian Korda may have one eye on the U.S. Women’s Open this weekend, as his sister chases more major success. Korda came through his opening round clash in four sets, and he could be the standout chance to reach the third round at Roland Garros for the third time in four years.

Pablo Carreno Busta vs. Frances Tiafoe

Frances Tiafoe will be one of the leading American hopes at Roland Garros this year. The 27-year-old showcased his best form in the first round after overcoming Roman Safiullin in straight sets. However, it would be a concern that he has reached the third round of the Grand Slam on just one occasion since 2015.  

Pablo Carreno Busta is an experienced veteran in majors, and he showcased that dominance in the opening round after beating Francisco Comesana in straight sets. His durability on the service is more evident after reaching at least the third round in five of his last seven appearances at the French Open.
