French Open: Today’s First Round Picks (May 27)

Today’s French Open Picks

Daniil Medvedev vs. Cameron Norrie

One of the most interesting first-round matchups will see a rematch of the round of 64 tie in the Italian Open. On that occasion, Daniil Medvedev claimed success in straight sets before being eliminated in the round of 16.

However, the Russian only boasts a win rate of 56% at the French Open. Norrie is still working his way back to full fitness, and he could peak at Roland Garros. The Brit has reached at least the third round at the French Open in three of the last four years. 

Grigor Dimitrov vs. Ethan Quinn

Grigor Dimitrov could be one of the weakest favorites of the day at the French Open. The Bulgarian crashed out in straight sets to an unseeded rival at the Italian Open last month, and he fell at the first round in 2021.

American player Ethan Quinn will be familiar with the clay surface after overcoming three qualifying matches to earn a spot at the French Open. Despite being an inexperienced player, we could see him upsetting the odds today.  

Ons Jabeur vs. Magdalena Frech

Ons Jabeur is typically very consistent in the Grand Slam events, and she has reached the quarterfinal stage in each of the last two French Open tournaments.  Magdalena Frech is yet to excel in a major event on the tennis schedule, but she has successfully gained qualification for each of the last three editions of the French Open.

However, she has fallen in the first round on two occasions. While we don’t expect Jabeur to win the tournament, she should have enough class to reach the next round.  

Coco Gauff vs. Olivia Gadecki

Olivia Gadecki will be making her first appearance in the first round proper at the French Open this year. The Australian has only reached the second round in a singles Grand Slam event on one previous occasion.

Therefore, it is hard to overlook one of the leading contenders to win the French Open on Tuesday. Coco Gauff enjoyed an excellent run to the final at the Italian Open earlier this month, and she has reached at least the quarterfinal stage in each of the last four years.
