Eagles’ Sirianni Needs to Keep Team Focused

When you’re the Eagles and your opening game in defense of your Super Bowl title starts with a star defensive lineman getting ejected immediately for spitting on your opponent, and you still manage to win the game, it’s a positive within a negative.

That’s exactly what happened with Philly in its Week 1, 24-20 win over the Cowboys when Jalen Carter spat on Dak Prescott and was tossed from the game before playing a snap.

They escaped with a win against a divisional opponent, but they did not play particularly well. If they repeat that performance and are as undisciplined and seemingly suffering from a Super Bowl hangover against the team they beat in that Super Bowl, the Chiefs, they’re going to lose.

Jalen Hurts was his usual efficient self with a 19 for 23 passing performance for 152 yards and no interceptions. He ran for 62 yards on 14 carries and scored 2 TDs. Saquon Barkley was mediocre when compared to his all-world 2024 season, rushing for 60 yards on 18 carries. Will Shipley ran for 26 yards on 3 carries.

A.J. Brown caught one pass on one target. That will become a problem very quickly with Brown expressing his displeasure very loudly if it continues. Tight end Dallas Goedert caught 7 balls, but is dealing with a knee issue and did not practice.

Expect a sufficiently contrite Carter to come out flying against the Chiefs.

Was the Loss to the Chargers a Warning Sign for the Chiefs?

Counting out Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and the Chiefs is unwise.

Still, at what point does this reign run its course?

What should be worrisome for the Chiefs is that their 27-21 loss was nowhere near as close as the score, and KC did not play that poorly. The Chargers were just better.

Mahomes was ok. He completed 24 of 39 passes for 258 yards and had a passer rating of 89.5. It was a solid game. But Justin Herbert outplayed him badly, completing 25 of 34 passes for 318 yards and 3 TDs.

Kelce caught 2 balls for 47 yards and a TD. Mahomes led the Chiefs in rushing yards with 57 on 6 carries and scored a TD. Isiah Pacheco had 25 yards on 5 carries. Kareem Hunt? 5 for 16. Hollywood Brown caught 10 balls for 99 yards.

Because they’re the Chiefs, they are still a threat, but after all the extra games and mental stress of staying on top, along with AFC teams that might be hungrier, could this be it?

Against the Eagles, a team not intimidated by the Chiefs, they need to put up a good showing and win the game.

Eagles vs Chiefs Pick

For the Eagles-Chiefs Super Bowl rematch, both teams already know what to expect from the other.

Philly was lucky to get away with a win in Week 1 over the Cowboys. The Chargers beat up on KC. Expect the Chiefs to try to run the ball against the Eagles, given how successful the Cowboys were on the ground. The Eagles will be more focused and prepared for Week 2 than they were in Week 1.

Can the Chiefs regroup, knowing the long road they have ahead and with the age and wear on their roster?

This week, they won’t and will fall to 0-2 with the Eagles winning outright.
