  • In NFL Week 3 Chiefs-Giants, two teams with dramatically different preseason expectations but with matching 0-2 records meet
  • Kansas City lost to two of the league’s better teams, the Chargers and Eagles; they desperately need this win
  • New York had a wild Week 2 loss to the Cowboys in overtime, but showed some impressive fight
  • The teams have not met since 2021, with the Chiefs winning 20-17

The Mahomes Magic Has Not Worked So Far in 2025

During Patrick Mahomes’ time as the Chiefs’ starting QB, if they were in a close game, the odds were that he would pull it out. In the first two games of the 2025 season, it has not worked out that way.

He has not played badly, but it’s not up to the ludicrously high standard he’s set. So far, he has completed 40 of 58 passes for 445 yards, 2 TDs, and 1 interception. His passer rating is a pedestrian 82.0. He’s rushed for 123 yards on 13 carries.

The team’s slow start is not solely due to him. He’s missing the suspended receiver Rashee Rice and the injured Xavier Worthy. Their running game has been ineffective, with Isiah Pacheco running for 47 yards on 15 carries and Kareem Hunt for 47 on 13 carries.

Defensively, they have been reasonably good, but they are not pressuring the QB and have not made the big play when necessary. Their Super Bowl LIX opponents, the Eagles, simply outmuscled them in Week 2’s 20-17 loss.

Worthy was limited in practice this week, so there is hope he can play.

The Giants Need More Than Moral Victories

At 0-2 in 2025 after a 3-14 season in 2024, it need not be said that the clock is ticking on head coach Brian Daboll and perhaps GM Joe Schoen. Following an impotent performance against the Commanders in Week 1, they put up a fight against the Cowboys in Week 2.

After the third quarter ended with the Cowboys leading 17-16, what had been a pedestrian affair turned into a Texas shootout. The teams combined for 41 points in the fourth quarter. New York came close to pulling it out, but a Brandon Aubrey 64-yard field goal with time expiring tied it. At the end of overtime, he hit a 46-yarder to win it.

While the Giants’ defense got run up and down the field, there were positives offensively. Russell Wilson can still throw the deep ball.

The Cowboys smothered the Giants’ run game, holding Tyrone Tracy Jr. to 15 yards on 5 carries, though he caught 4 balls for 36 yards.

Malik Nabers caught 9 balls for 167 yards; Wan’Dale Robinson caught 8 balls for 142 yards.

The defense could not stop Dak Prescott through the air, nor could they control Javonte Williams on the ground.

New York is reaching a critical point in their season already. A good showing against the Chiefs might not cut it with owner John Mara, but a brutal beating will definitely draw his ire. He has been quiet so far. With their schedule, they’ll need a few upsets to have a reasonably respectable season and save some jobs.

Chiefs vs Giants Pick

For Week 3 Chiefs-Giants, the 6-point spread is strangely light considering how shaky the Giants’ defense has been and how desperate for a win the Chiefs are.

If the Giants couldn’t stop the Cowboys, it’s hard to see them stopping Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and a Chiefs’ offense that is frustrated as to how they’ve opened the 2025 season. Already, they’re enduring questions as to whether their run of dominance is at its end.

The Chiefs will blow out the Giants by double-digits.
