Was Week 5 the Sean Payton Turning Point for Denver?

For three quarters, the Broncos exhibited the "close but not yet" template in which it appeared that head coach Sean Payton likely needed another foundational season before his team was truly ready to contend for a Super Bowl.

In the fourth quarter, however, Denver overcame a 17-3 deficit by scoring 2 TDs and converting a gutsy 2-point conversion to take an 18-17 lead with 7:36 remaining. Their defense held Jalen Hurts and especially the slumping Saquon Barkley, kicked an insurance field goal, and won 21-17.

Denver's defense has been superlative, ranked 2nd in the NFL in points allowed per game. They are running the ball effectively with J.K. Dobbins and are ranked 4th in the league in rushing yards per game. Bo Nix is fearless, and they play a relatively conservative offense with occasional shots downfield, relying on ball control and defense.

The Jets are winless, but they have weapons and are not a pure pushover. This is a classic letdown game for the Broncos after a huge victory over the champs and in advance of playing the floundering two New York City area teams, the Jets and Giants.

If the Broncos win both, they will, minimally, share 1st place in the tough AFC West.

Aaron Glenn Follows the Lead of the Wrong Head Coach

In a positive sense, Aaron Glenn played under:

  • Pete Carroll
  • Bill Parcells
  • Herm Edwards
  • Sean Payton

As an assistant coach, he worked for:

  • Payton
  • Dan Campbell

However, he was also in some difficult circumstances, none worse than when he was with the Jets in their darkest(?) time with Rich Kotite as the head coach and de facto GM.

Kotite's two years were disastrous, with a cumulative record of 4-28. He was fired and replaced by Parcells.

Now, the first five games of Glenn's first head coaching gig have been such a nightmare that there is speculation he might last only one season, or worse, be fired before the end of the season.

In Week 5's loss to the Cowboys, Dak Prescott picked them apart, completing 18 of 29 passes for 237 yards and 4 TDs.

Javonte Williams ran for 135 yards on 16 carries, rushed for 1 TD, and caught another.

Justin Fields' performance is overshadowed by the loss and the shaky nature of the Cowboys' defense. But he had a very good game, completing 32 of 46 passes for 2 touchdowns. Breece Hall ran for 113 yards on 14 carries.

Fields might not be the answer to the Jets' QB problems, but he is not why they're 0-5. For the season, he has a 100.1 passer rating and has yet to throw an interception. That would be effective enough if the Jets' defense could stop anyone.

They lost by 2 to the Steelers and Buccaneers, but as Parcells said ad nauseam, "you are what your record says you are."

New York is running the ball effectively, ranked 3rd in the league in rushing yards per game. They're near the bottom in passing yards, but that is partially due to Fields being constrained and trying to avoid mistakes. Perhaps they should open it up. Defensively, the Jets are 27th in the NFL for defensive rushing yards per game. They're last in takeaway differential (-8), made worse by Fields not having thrown any picks. They fumble too much.

Broncos vs Jets NFL Pick

Broncos-Jets NFL Week 6 is a trap game for Denver. Despite the Jets being winless and under siege by the fans and media, they have shown positive flashes. If a play or two went the other way, they could be 2-3 or even 3-2.

Still, given Denver's excellent secondary and ability to stop the run, it's difficult to see the Jets moving the ball. Payton will have Dobbins run the ball down the Jets' throats, get a lead, and kill the clock, Parcells style.

Denver is favored by a touchdown, but New York will keep it closer than that, though the Broncos will win outright.
