  • Utah State bowed out of the MW Semifinals in an 83-72 loss to Colorado State.
  • UCLA was dominated by Wisconsin in the Big-10 Quarterfinals, losing 86-70.
  • These two teams last met on March 17, 2001, in a game that UCLA won 75-50.

Utah State and UCLA meet in a clash between top teams in the West. The Aggies had a great season, but face an uphill battle against the capable Bruins. The winner of this game may draw a matchup with 2-seed Tennessee in the second round, but first they need to escape this clash.

Utah State Seeks Statement Win

Utah State earned their 3rd straight tourney trip and 5th in the last 6. They have established themselves as a basketball power in the Mountain West, despite a recent move at head coach. The Aggies made the 2nd round last year, but are still seeking their first Sweet 16 since 1970.

With a move to the Pac-12 on the horizon, Utah State is seeking to prove their ability on the court. They bowed out of their conference tourney early, but have the experience and talent to bounce back and upset UCLA. They’ll be relying on leading-scorer Ian Martinez to lead the way.

UCLA Eyeing Up 2nd-Round Clash

UCLA had a streaky season this year. They started 10-1, went 1-5, then 7-0, and finally finished 4-4 down the stretch. The Bruins are capable of beating good teams, but are also a bit vulnerable when their offense isn’t firing. To hold off Utah State, UCLA needs F Tyler Bilodeau to heat up.

The Bruins played poorly against Wisconsin on both sides of the ball in their most recent loss, but also earned a key victory against Michigan State back in early February. Whether or not they can recapture the magic of their winning streaks will determine if they win and advance.

Utah State Aggies vs UCLA Bruins Pick

The Mountain West has really struggled in the tournament offer the past few seasons, despite earning multiple bids. That trend is likely to continue this year, with San Diego State already being blown out of the First Four. Of the four Mountain West teams that made it, Utah State has the best chance of winning. Even so, I don’t see them getting past UCLA in this matchup.
