Yankees Try to Keep Their Hot Start Going in the Home Opener
The Yankees' pitching has been superlative in winning 5 of their first 6 games on the road in San Francisco and Seattle, particularly the starting pitching. While Max Fried and Cam Schlittler are getting the attention, Will Warren and Ryan Weathers were also very good.
In his first start, Warren threw 4.1 innings, allowed 4 hits, and 1 earned run. He struck out 7 and walked 2.
The Yankees have gotten out of the gate slowly at the plate, but the pitching has carried them. Aaron Judge is batting .125, but has 2 homers. Ben Rice and Giancarlo Stanton have been mashing. Rice is batting .412 with a 1.289 OPS. Stanton is hitting .500 with a homer.
New York has had almost no success in limited exposure to Marlins starter Eury Perez. The only one with a hit is Rice, who is 1 for 2 with a double.
Surprising Marlins Face a Challenge in the Bronx
It's only six games, but the Marlins' 5-1 start is impressive and could be for real. In 2025, they improved by 17 games from their 62-win campaign in 2024. President of Baseball Operations Peter Bendix came over from the Rays, so he's experienced in building within a budget.
To be fair, they beat the Rockies and White Sox, two of the worst teams in baseball. But wins are wins.
Against the Yankees, they send Eury Perez to the hill. In his first start, he threw 7 innings, allowed 5 hits, gave up 3 earned runs, walked 1, and struck out 8. He has enormous potential and could be a rotation centerpiece for Miami.
The Marlins have come out swinging, particularly catcher Liam Hicks, who is batting .467 with an MLB-leading 1.133 OPS and 12 RBI, and an NL-leading 3 homers. Third baseman Javier Sanoja is batting .583 with 2 doubles. Xavier Edwards is at .409. And Otto Lopez is batting .318 with a .991 OPS.
No current Marlins have ever faced Warren in the majors.
Marlins vs Yankees Pick
The Yankees want to continue their scorching start in their home opener. But the Marlins are not an easy mark, especially with how they have been hitting and the tough Perez on the mound.
New York has not been hitting all that well. Perhaps getting some home cooking will help. They did start on the West Coast, which can be difficult early in the season. But the Marlins have been playing well and will ruin the home opener for the Yankees in the Bronx.
