Sanchez Strives to Stop Phils’ Slide

The Phillies’ skid has dropped them from 1st place in the NL East. Still, it is likely a blip, and they will get back into the win column soon enough. Cristopher Sanchez gets the start for the opener in Toronto.

Sanchez has been overshadowed in the Phillies’ rotation by Jesus Luzardo and Zack Wheeler, but he has been excellent in 2025. He has a 1.8 bWAR in 11 starts. His ERA is 3.32, and he’s struck out 70 in 59.2 innings.

He’s thrown at least 5 innings in nine of his 11 starts.

Against the Blue Jays, Sanchez has held Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to 1 hit in 5 at-bats (a double). Alejandro Kirk is 2 for 6 with 2 doubles. George Springer is 1 for 6 with a single. Davis Schneider is 1 for 6 with a double.

The Phillies’ bullpen was getting by since Jose Alvarado’s suspension, but Jordan Romano has been terrible, and they need relief help. J.T. Realmuto is showing signs of age and wear both offensively and defensively, batting .223 with 5 homers. Kyle Schwarber has a .983 OPS and 19 homers.

Blue Jays’ Streak Has Quieted the Critics for Now

Just last week, the Blue Jays were two games below .500 and stumbling along as a major disappointment. Since then, they won 2 of 3 over the Rangers and swept 4 straight from the Athletics. To be fair, neither team they beat is very good, but they don’t make the schedule.

The Jays send Bowden Francis to the hill. The righty has a 5.04 ERA, having given up 58 hits in 55.1 innings and 31 earned runs. However, in his last start against the Rangers, he pitched 5 scoreless innings. He’s generally been reliable except for one horrid start against the Red Sox in late-April when he gave up 7 earned runs in 3 innings.

For the Phillies, when facing Francis, Bryce Harper has had 1 at-bat and hit a home run. Schwarber is 2 for 3 with a home run. Brandon Marsh is 2 for 2 with 2 singles.

Kirk is having a good year for the Blue Jays with a .301/.350/.386 slash. Guerrero’s OPS is at .829 with 8 homers. George Springer has an .846 OPS with 8 homers. Scuffling, big-ticket free agent signing Anthony Santander is on the injured list with a left shoulder problem. He is batting .179 with a .577 OPS.

Phillies vs Blue Jays Pick: Philly Will Get Its Act Together and End the Jays’ Streak

As well as the Blue Jays have played lately, they were beating some bad teams. Philly was so hot for a month that a lull should have been expected. Sanchez has been excellent, and Bowden is inconsistent, so this should be a Philly win.
