LA’s Kershaw Has Been Effective After a Slow Start

Dodgers’ future Hall of Famer Clayton Kershaw is a shadow of what he was in his prime when he was one of the most dominating forces in MLB history. Kershaw was an extra piece when he first returned to action in May. However, injuries to Tony Gonsolin, Roki Sasaki, Tyler Glasnow, and Blake Snell have put Kershaw back in the spotlight as a key pitcher, along with Shohei Ohtani.

In seven starts, Kershaw has a 3.31 ERA in 32.2 innings. He’s allowed 31 hits and 12 earned runs, walking 12, and striking out 24. When put in the context of his awful first start against the Angels when he gave up 5 earned runs in 4 innings, it’s even more impressive. And he’s doing it with diminished stuff.

Against Kershaw, the Rockies’ Thairo Estrada is 4 for 16 with a home run. Orlando Arcia is 4 for 15 with a triple. Kyle Farmer is 2 for 10 with 2 singles and a walk.

In a lineup with Freddie Freeman and Shohei Ohtani garnering most of the attention, catcher Will Smith is leading the NL in batting and on-base percentage. Of course, Ohtani is leading the NL in slugging percentage, OPS, and home runs. And he’s pitching again.

Gomber Makes 3rd Start Since Returning From Injury

Rockies’ starter Austin Gomber has shown flashes in the past. He’s pitched on some terrible teams, so it’s hard to get a read on him. He is making his third start of 2025 after missing the first two-and-a-half months of the season with a shoulder ailment.

In his first start against the Braves, he tossed 5 shutout innings, allowing 2 hits, striking out 4. In his second start against the Diamondbacks, he gave up 9 earned runs and 12 hits in 4.2 innings.

The Dodgers have had past success against Gomber. Freeman is 6 for 14 with a double and 2 home runs. Ohtani is 4 for 11 with a triple and a home run. Andy Pages is 2 for 3 with a home run. Mookie Betts is 3 for 7 with a double and a home run.

For a team that plays in a very hitter-friendly park, the Rockies don’t hit much. Hunter Goodman has been excellent with a 1.5 bWAR and an OPS approaching .850. Jordan Beck has an over .800 OPS. Still, the team is weak offensively.
