Struggling D-Backs Try to Keep Pace in the NL West

The Diamondbacks are at .500 with a 26-26 record. That leaves them in 4th place in the NL West. While the Dodgers, Giants, and Padres all got off to searing starts, they have slowed considerably. The D-Backs are hanging around in the division and are, historically, a second-half team.

They have lost the first two games of their 3-game set in St. Louis and send MLB wins leader Brandon Pfaadt to the mound to try and salvage the third game.

As everyone knows, wins are no longer viewed with the reverence they once were. However, Pfaadt is a solid and reliable starter. He has pitched into the sixth inning in eight of his 10 starts in 2025.

Pfaadt has surrendered 56 hits in 56.2 innings, allowed 24 earned runs, walked 14, and struck out 44.

Against Pfaadt, the Cards’ Nolan Arenado is 2 for 5 with a home run. Brendan Donovan is 2 for 4. Lars Nootbar is 2 for 6 with a home run. Victor Scott II is 1 for 2 with a double.

The D-Backs’ Corbin Carroll’s OPS is still over .900. He has 15 homers, 9 doubles, and 6 triples. Lourdes Gurriel’s batting average is increasing incrementally and is now up to .235 after a woeful start. He has 8 homers and a .708 OPS. Pavin Smith’s OPS is still nearly .900.

Gray Tries to Build on His Last Start

Sonny Gray has been up and down this season, but in his last start against the Tigers, he was excellent. He pitched 6 shutout innings, gave up 3 hits, walked 1, and struck out 10. In the prior start, he gave up 7 earned runs in 3.2 innings.

Overall, he has a 4.02 ERA in 56 innings this season. For the Diamondbacks, Josh Naylor is 6 for 19 with 2 home runs. Eugenio Suarez is 2 for 8 with 2 singles. Randal Grichuk is 3 for 7 with 3 doubles.

The Cardinals’ season was going nowhere at the end of April. In the offseason, they had made few moves to improve and the club seemed to acknowledge that this was a bridge year.

However, the players have had a different idea throughout May. Since May 2, they have won 15 of 19 to get within striking distance of the 1st place Cubs.

Donovan looked like an MVP early in the season. He has come to Earth, but still has an .829 OPS. Arenado is a shadow of what he was in Colorado and his early time in St. Louis. His OPS is below .700. He’s still played excellent defense. Masyn Winn, after a terrible start, is up to .260 with a .745 OPS. Jordan Walker is still hovering around .200.

Diamondbacks vs Cardinals Pick: St. Louis Completes the Sweep

Although Pfaadt is leading the majors in wins, the Cardinals have been so blazing hot, and Gray pitched so well in his last start, that St. Louis should continue its stellar May. The Cards will finish off the sweep and stay right behind the Cubs in the NL Central.
