Event Preview

The first Classic of the season in Ireland is set for this weekend, as the Irish 2000 Guineas will be staged on Saturday. A total distance of a mile will be covered at the Curragh, and it has been a notable prep race ahead of the St. James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot next month.

Field Of Gold will be a red-hot favorite for the Classic this weekend. John & Thady Gosden have changed jockeys ahead of this race, with Kieran Shoemaker likely to blame for the runner’s runner-up finish in the G1 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket last month.

The three-year-old has all the form in the book to feature, but personally, I’m not a fan of jockeys being changed, especially on younger horses, as I like the rider to be familiar with the horse.

Interestingly, Aidan O’Brien has two runners in the race on Saturday, but both have been overlooked in the betting. Officer is the preference for Ryan Moore, and the three-year-old could yet have untapped potential after winning on his second start this season when beating Currawood over course and distance at the start of the month.

Scorthy Champ was well back in the field in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket, but he could run well at a bigger price this weekend after making his seasonal reappearance in the UK at the start of the month.

Irish 2000 Guineas Picks

I’m red-hot on the chances of Cosmic Year for trainer Harry Charlton in the Irish 2000 Guineas. The three-year-old has won twice from two starts on the turf, with the latest coming over seven furlongs at Newmarket. Still has huge potential on this step up in grade, and the booking of in-form jockey Oisin Murphy is a major plus.
