Today’s Horse Racing Picks: Churchill Downs (May 31)

Just seven days before the Belmont Stakes rounds of the Triple Crown, there will be interesting action being staged at the home of the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, May 31. In total, there are six Grade Threes on the card in Louisville this weekend, and you can find today’s horse racing picks here.

Today’s Horse Racing Picks: Churchill Downs (May 31)

G3 Regret Stakes (R11- 5:38 PM ET)

The feature on the card at Churchill Downs today comes in the form of the G3 Regret Stakes, which will cover a total distance of 1 1/8 miles on the turf. There are a number of fascinating contenders, including Fionn for Brad Cox, and Fixin To Bee. However, the preference is for Lush Lips for trainer Brandon Walsh.

The three-year-old has made an impressive start to the season, which includes a fine second in the G2 Edgewood Stakes at Churchill Downs last time out. Prior to that, the filly finished an excellent third in the G3 Florida Oaks. Down in grade today, and she should be hard to beat if she maintains her progression.

G3 Blame Stakes (R10- 5:27 PM ET)

A red-hot renewal of the G3 Blame Stakes is set for Saturday, with a talented field of ten competing over 1 1/8 miles on the dirt. All eyes will be on last year’s Kentucky Derby winner, Mystik Dan, who makes his return to the scene of his greatest moment.

However, the value in the market could be Hall Of Fame for trainer Steven Asmussen. The four-year-old started this season in excellent form with a great win in the G3 Mineshaft. He has run to form in Group Two company on his last two efforts, including when last seen in third at Churchill in the G2 Alysheba. Should make his presence felt in this company with a fitness edge.

G3 Arlington Stakes (R9- 4:55 PM ET)

The G3 Arlington will be run over a distance of 1 1/16 miles on Saturday, and it will serve as an important prep ahead of the Arlington Million later in the season. Plenty have leading claims in this race, including Silent Heart, Mercante, and Gigante.

However, the narrow preference is for Herchee. The four-year-old produced a career-best effort on his return to action last month at Keeneland, posting an Equibase rating of 112. Has knocked on the door in graded races in the past, including when an excellent third in the G3 Bryan Station Stakes last October. Is more unexposed than most, and could be open to the most improvement.
