A high-quality edition of the Jim Dandy Stakes will be staged at Saratoga this Saturday, as a field of five goes to post for the Grade Two.

Race Preview

Despite being a Grade Two race, the Jim Dandy Stakes has a high-quality roll of honor in recent years. Among those include one-time Kentucky Derby favorite Fierceness and Belmont Stakes victor Essential Quality. Sovereignty could maintain the excellent recent record of Triple Crown contenders in the race at Saratoga.

The superstar has been the standout three-year-old in the U.S. this season, winning the Derby and Belmont Stakes. His only defeat in four starts this term came when second behind Tappan Street in the G1 Florida Derby in March. However, since then, he has been electric, beating last weekend’s Haskell Stakes winner Journalism on two occasions.

Baeza is the likely alternative angle for the John Shirreffs yard. The three-year-old was an excellent third in the Derby, before finishing in the same position in the Belmont Stakes. Gets weight off the runner that beat him in both races this weekend, but it could still be unlikely to see the form reversed.

Mo Plex is the most interesting contender this weekend for trainer Jeremiah Englehart, as he has won five from eight career starts. That includes two victories in three efforts this season, with the latest of those coming in the G3 Ohio Derby. But, Mo Plex is proven at Saratoga after winning the G3 Sanford and Funny Cide Stakes as a two-year-old.

Jim Dandy Stakes Picks

This weekend, we get to see the standout three-year-old in the United States back in action. Sovereignty is very challenging to oppose in the betting, but an Exotic angle could see Hill Road as the fascinating selection to take second.

The Chad Brown yard is in excellent form, and he could put his fifth in the Belmont Stakes behind him.
