Event Preview
For the first time in 2025, Formula 1 action will be staged in Europe at the end of May. The first of three consecutive races will be staged at Imola, as the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix will be contested. This race has been on the schedule since the COVID-19 pandemic, and it has been an ever-present since 2020.
All eyes will be on Ferrari this weekend, as the Italian team will have huge hopes on their shoulders in one of their two home races. Poor strategic decisions appeared to irritate drivers in Miami, with Lewis Hamilton coming across incredibly frustrated on team radio in the U.S.
Their finishing positions would have done little to ease their stress, with Charles Leclerc finishing seventh, and Hamilton finishing a place further back.
McLaren once again showcased their dominance on track in Miami, as the team recorded a second one-two finish of the season. However, it is Oscar Piastri who has the momentum on his side, as the Australian recorded a third straight victory to open up a 16-point advantage at the top of the Drivers’ Championship.
There will be increased pressure on Lando Norris in Italy, as the Brit was a clear pre-season pick for championship glory this season. However, his inability to avoid drama on first laps is becoming an issue, while his rivalry with Max Verstappen could ultimately be detrimental to his title dreams in 2025.
It could be argued that Mercedes are the second fastest team on the grid this season. George Russell achieved a fourth podium finish of the season in Miami, while Kimi Antonelli claimed a fine sixth. Red Bull’s pace remains a concern, with Max Verstappen only finishing a distant fourth.
I said at the beginning of the season that Williams is my team to watch in 2025, and the combination of Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz enjoyed an excellent weekend in Miami. Albon comfortably held off the Ferraris, and another strong qualifying could lead the team to more points in Italy.
Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix Picks
McLaren looks the fastest car on the grid at this stage of the season, and it appears incredibly challenging to see any of the chasing pack closing the gap in Italy. For that reason, we could see Piastri putting together another strong weekend to extend his advantage in the Drivers’ Championship.
