  • The Bill Belichick-Michael Strahan interview on Good Morning America was important for the UNC head coach
  • Most people were interested not in Belichick’s new book, but in how he addressed his relationship with girlfriend Jordon Hudson
  • Belichick briefly discussed the matter in typical Belichick fashion
  • Did the Belichick-Strahan interview cauterize the damage and quiet the noise?

Belichick’s Damage Control

During Bill Belichick’s 24-year reign as the undisputed czar of the New England Patriots, he was a master at mitigating distractions and keeping his team focused on what was important. The results speak for themselves with nine Super Bowl appearances and six Lombardi trophies.

However, in his new role as the head coach of the University of North Carolina, he immediately walked headfirst into a firestorm as his girlfriend Jordon Hudson has taken a central role in the coach’s life.

The age difference between the 73-year-old Belichick and the 24-year-old Hudson drew attention, mockery, and criticism from those who, bluntly, should be roundly ignored because it’s none of their business.

Still, Belichick’s reputation is in jeopardy as a newbie to NCAAF and after being shut out in his pursuit of another NFL opportunity. The disastrous interview with CBS This Morning showed just how quickly circumstances can spiral out of control.

For someone like Belichick, who is accustomed to dictatorial control of everything, including the media, this was new and unfamiliar terrain.

The blowback was so terrible that speculation and odds suggested that he might not be coaching UNC when the season starts.

Will Belichick Be UNC Head Coach in Week 1 2025?Odds
Yes-1500
No+600

The odds are heavily in favor of Belichick coaching, but +600 that he won’t be is not “Chicago White Sox win the 2025 World Series” infinite to the point that bookmakers won’t bother taking the action.

Strahan Knew Why Belichick Was There

It’s no mystery why Belichick chose Strahan and GMA for the first major interview after the earlier self-inflicted wound. It was clear from the outset that Strahan did a role reversal for Belichick, mirroring Strahan setting the NFL sack record in 2001 when Brett Favre fell to the ground for the specific purpose of giving Strahan the record.

Both Strahan and Belichick have a Giants lineage. Belichick gets emotional when discussing his time with Big Blue. So it’s obvious why this was the venue Belichick chose.

Hudson was nowhere to be found, for obvious reasons. It was her cosplaying PR professional that started this mess in the first place. Belichick has new (professional) PR guidance, and it’s clear both he and his girlfriend understood that her presence would have been problematic, to say the least, whether she stood by silently or not.

This Was a Typical Book Tour Interview

Had Belichick written a tell-all and gone scorched earth on past enemies, real and perceived, then it’s fair game to ask hard questions during the book tour.

But he didn’t.

The book is about his view of leadership and winning. As of this writing, it’s #832 in overall sales on Amazon. It’s #1 in football coaching and football biographies; #2 in football books.

The GMA interview was a friendly atmosphere to discuss his book with a Hall of Fame former player. Of course, he had to address the controversy, and he did so in a very generic way with no pressure or follow-up from Strahan.

Nor should there have been any pressure or follow-up.

GMA has largely the same intent as CBS Sunday Morning does in bringing people the news while sprinkling in feel-good stories and gentle interviews with prominent people. The interview that started all the trouble would have come and gone had Belichick stuck to the story of how he and Hudson met on an airplane — apocryphal or not — and had she not repeatedly intervened like a criminal defense attorney.

The Bill Belichick-Michael Strahan Interview Served Its Purpose

The primary goal was to remove the focus from Belichick’s relationship with Hudson and put it back on his book and his prowess as a football coach. Really, that’s all that should matter.

As for the questions about his future, the odds address that as well.

The same issue he had before he even went public with his new relationship remains in place: Will he get another chance in the NFL?

Before any of this, the answer appeared to be no.

Now?

Will Belichick Be An NFL Head Coach By the 2026 NFL Draft?Odds
Yes+600

It’s telling that there are no odds available for “no.”

That’s currently off the table.

As for the possibility that he would not even coach UNC? That’s essentially gone. And that was the objective of the interview.

So, what’s your take?
