Event Preview

One of the most important events on the PGA Tour is set for this weekend, with a purse of $25 million being up for grabs at TPC Sawgrass for The Players Championship. The event will see a total distance of 7,189 yards covered, with the current record scores held by Greg Norman, who finished 24-under with an aggregate score of 254 in 1994.

Scottie Scheffler is likely to be a red-hot favorite to win the event for the third time. The world’s top-ranked player was a one-shot winner at The Players Championship in 2024, and his form in recent weeks has been improving, despite slow starts.

Rory McIlroy will undeniably have a leading chance after holding his nerve to win in a playoff 12 months ago. That was the Irishman’s second win at TPC Sawgrass. His form this season has been reliable, most recently finishing T2 at the Genesis Invitational.

Collin Morikawa could be an interesting angle at a bigger price. The American has looked back to his best so far this season, winning the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, before finishing in the top ten in the Genesis Invitational. Building towards another big showing.

Tommy Fleetwood’s consistency will also ensure that he holds a strong chance. The Englishman snapped his long run on the PGA Tour last season, and has already shown flashes of his best form at the Genesis Invitational and AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

The Players Championship Picks

At a bigger price, Akshay Bhatia could be worth a bet. The American bounced back to his best form in the opening two rounds at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and has achieved top-ten finishes in two of his last three appearances.
