Race Preview

The first big Grade One race in North America in 2026 is set for Gulfstream Park on Saturday. A field of 12 will line up in the G1 Pegasus World Cup, with the field covering a distance of 1 1/8 miles. A lucrative $3 million purse will be up for grabs, while runners could use this race as a prep for big Middle Eastern targets.

In truth, this is far from a vintage renewal of the race, and the final field is slightly underwhelming. Disco Time is a likely favorite for the Brad Cox yard, as the unbeaten four-year-old chases a sixth straight win. The son of Not This Time was eye-catching when winning the Dwyer Stakes in November, but he is unproven in Grade One company.

Tappan Street represents the same yard, and will be the ride of Luis Saez. The four-year-old has won three from four career starts, and was red-hot in Grade One company at the start of 2024 when winning the G3 Holy Bull and G1 Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park. Still looks progressive, and 2026 could be a breakout year.

Bob Baffert is represented by Madaket Road. The four-year-old has been slightly frustrating throughout his career, finishing fourth in the G1 Florida Derby and G1 Malibu Stakes. Is consistent at the highest table, but he would be a disappointing winner of this race as he looks exposed enough.

Skippylongstocking and Full Serrano are two of the older horses in this race. The former was third in this race 12 months ago, and he looked back to his best when warming up for the race when winning the G3 Harlan’s Holiday.

Full Serrano has shown flashes of excellent form, winning the G1 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile in 2024. However, was a disappointing fifth in the 2025 edition, and he could be regressing.

Pegasus World Cup Picks

White Abarrio could be the safe play when making Pegasus World Cup picks. The likeable seven-year-old is a former G1 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner, and was the victor in this race 12 months ago.

His record at Gulfstream is excellent, also winning the G3 Ghostzapper in March. Retains his ability with some high speed figures in defeat in the G1 Whitney and G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup. Goes well fresh, and ticks plenty of boxes against unproven rivals.
