Is Cam Ward the Franchise QB the Titans Need?

A benefit of having the worst record in the league is getting the first overall pick in the draft. With that, the Titans selected Miami QB Cam Ward.

Ward was an All-American and finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy voting. He threw for 4,313 yards, led the FBS in touchdown passes with 39, and led the ACC in yards-per-attempt at 9.5 and passer efficiency rating at 172.2. He only threw 7 interceptions.

Ward is a pocket passer who did not run often. He is a sound decision-maker and a good fit for head coach Brian Callahan’s West Coast offense.

Any pretense of a quarterback competition between Ward and last season’s primary starter Will Levis ended when Levis decided to have season-ending shoulder surgery. Levis has likely thrown his last pass for the Titans. The issue is not simply Ward’s draft status and his suitability for Callahan and offensive coordinator Nick Holz’s offense, but that Callahan and Levis were not on the same page from the start.

Levis is a risk-taker. The West Coast offense is not about that. With Ward’s accuracy and pocket presence, he will stick to what the coaches tell him far more than the freewheeling Levis did.

The Titans have had poor luck with quarterbacks. Every time they selected a QB high in the draft, that QB faltered. It happened with Marcus Mariota and Vince Young. The last “star” QB they had was the late Steve McNair.

Perhaps Ward is the long-awaited answer.

The Titans Are Building From the Inside Out

Along with getting what they hope is a franchise QB, Tennessee paid close attention to the offensive and defensive lines. On offense, tackle Dan Moore was signed away from the Steelers, veteran guard Kevin Zeitler comes over from the Lions, former Jaguars tackle Blake Hance was signed, and 6’4″, 316-pound guard Jackson Slater was drafted in the fifth round out of Sacramento State.

For the defensive line, they signed Dre’Mont Jones away from the Seahawks and Carlos Watkins from the Cowboys. Edge Oluwafemi Oladejo was drafted in the second round out of UCLA.

Their pass rush should be much improved, and Ward will be protected in the pocket. Their secondary remains a strength led by ball-hawking safety Amani Hooker.

On offense, they signed veteran Tyler Lockett after the Seahawks released him. The Titans also added Van Jefferson from the Steelers, and drafted Chimere Dike out of Florida and Elic Ayomanor out of Stanford, both in the fourth round.

Veteran running back Tony Pollard and young Tyjae Spears provide a solid running attack.

Weak Division, Weak Schedule

The improved roster is one thing that can help them rise dramatically in the standings, but the schedule and their division are more favorable to their cause.

In the AFC South, they play two games each against the Texans, Colts, and Jaguars. On the road, they play the Broncos, Cardinals, Raiders, Browns, and 49ers. At home, they host the Rams, Patriots, Chargers, Seahawks, Chiefs, and Saints.

Titans Over/Under For Wins

Rookie quarterbacks are always difficult to gauge accurately. Will Ward light the NFL on fire, will he struggle, or will he be somewhere in between?

Regardless, the Titans’ better personnel, favorable schedule, and shaky division should help them get beyond 5.5 wins.
