The Rams’ Surprising Run Changed Their Perspective

Five games into the Rams’ 2024 season, the team was going nowhere. At 1-4, speculation was rampant that a dramatic selloff was on the table, with possibly even Stafford on the move. But with the archrival 49ers struggling and the NFC West wide open, they stuck it out and battled to season’s end, eventually winning the division.

Their Wild Card Game against the Vikings needed to be moved to Arizona due to the California wildfires. The team overcame more adversity with their 27-9 blowout of the 14-3 Vikings.

In the NFC Divisional Round in Philadelphia the next week, the Rams shook the eventual Super Bowl champion Eagles before falling short with 31 seconds remaining in the 28-22 loss.

Now, for 2025, the Rams are again trying to contend for a championship. Stafford toyed with leaving LA; the Rams toyed with moving on. But the sides eventually came together for a two-year contract.

LA Replaces One Star Veteran Receiver With Another Amid Other Moves

Longtime Rams receiver Cooper Kupp was released after a trade could not be completed. He signed with the NFC West rival Seahawks.

To replace him as a sure-handed veteran wideout, LA signed Davante Adams. Aaron Rodgers’ favorite receiver caught a combined 85 balls with the Raiders and Jets. After working in those two dysfunctional environments, the Rams will be a welcome change.

To bolster the defensive line, they signed Poona Ford away from the Chargers. Tight end Terrance Ferguson, their second-round draft pick out of Oregon, gives Stafford another big (6’6″, 230 lbs.) target. Tyler Higbee, Colby Parklinson, and Davis Allen return to the tight end corps.

Judging the Rams Based on 2024 Is a Mistake

Although the Rams’ 2024 season was notable in that they didn’t give up when the season started so terribly, they undoubtedly benefited from the mediocrity in their division. McVay maximized his team’s talent and led them to a division title and a near run to the NFC Championship Game.

Still, injuries destroyed the 49ers’ season. The Seahawks and Cardinals were comparable in talent to the Rams, but the Rams happened to beat the teams they were supposed to beat, along with a huge performance in a 44-42 win over the Bills.

San Francisco cannot be as unlucky in 2025 as it was in 2024. Seattle will look dramatically different with Sam Darnold under center.

The Rams’ Schedule is Relatively Favorable

Along with the two games each against their divisional foes, they host the Texans, Colts, Saints, Buccaneers, and Lions. They visit the Titans, Eagles, Ravens, Jaguars, Panthers, and Falcons.

Rams Over/Under For Wins

The NFC West will likely be as parity-laden as it was in 2024, meaning any one of the four teams can win it. With Stafford back in the fold, Puka Nacua on the other side of the field, their depth at tight end, and their running game with Kyren Williams and Blake Corum, scoring should not be a problem.

As a team, they were inconsistent defensively, but they have a deep and aggressive defensive line that can cover for deficiencies in the secondary.

McVay is under contract for two more years, but there has been a persistent fear that he will eventually walk away for a television career. He’s young enough to return to coaching if he chooses to after a few years off the sideline.

With that in mind, this could be the last run for the McVay/Stafford Rams. They will do whatever they can to make it count. With that, they will surpass 9.5 wins and are a threat in the playoffs.
