Is the 3rd Head Coach the Charm for Trevor Lawrence?
Trevor Lawrence is not being called a “bust.” At least not yet.
However, as the heralded number 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, more was expected from him than a 22-38 record in four years and two playoff games.
Still, when looking at his numbers and the circumstances, it’s hard to blame him. His career completion percentage is 63.3; he’s thrown 69 TD passes and 46 interceptions; his passer rating is a respectable 85.0.
He’s been in the league for four years and is now on his third full-time head coach and third offensive coordinator. His first head coach, Urban Meyer, seemed to want to get fired almost immediately upon reluctantly moving from college to the NFL. His second head coach, Doug Pederson, won a Super Bowl with the Eagles, but that is increasingly looking like a fluke given the disarray he oversaw in Jacksonville.
Now, he’s got Liam Coen. Coen was the Buccaneers‘ offensive coordinator in 2024. Before that, he worked at the University of Kentucky and held several roles for the Rams.
Coen, having worked under Sean McVay and being a perceived key to Baker Mayfield’s career resurgence, bodes well for Lawrence. He must stay healthy. After shoulder problems and a concussion on a late hit ended his 2024 season, he is reportedly healthy, and the Jaguars took steps to improve his protection and options on offense.
Travis Hunter Might Be a Generational Star
Hype machines, particularly those surrounding the NFL Draft, tend to overstate a player’s maximum abilities. With second overall pick, Travis Hunter out of Colorado, the superlatives might not go far enough. The 2X All-American and 2024 Heisman Trophy winner can be an All-Pro wide receiver and cornerback in the NFL.
The Jaguars intend to use him in both roles. This isn’t a Chuck Bednarik “60 Minute Man,” “Concrete Charlie” situation where Hunter will play for the entire game as Bednarik did at center and linebacker (hence the nickname, “60 Minute Man”; for the record, “Concrete” Charlie wasn’t based on his constitution, but because he sold concrete in the offseason).
But this type of player gives the Jags a weapon other teams do not have. The problem is deployment. Coen, as a first-year head coach, needs to find the right spots to put Hunter in on offense and defense.
The wisest course of action will likely hinge on the opponent. They must also consider how to keep him healthy and fresh for the entire season and, they hope, the playoffs.
Protecting Lawrence Was an Offseason Priority
Lawrence is useless if he’s not on the field. The knockout hit the QB suffered against the Texans when Azeez Al-Shaair hit him as he was sliding made it clear that he needs to be protected better.
Guard Patrick Mekari was signed away from the Ravens. Center Robert Hainsey comes over from the Buccaneers. Offensive lineman Wyatt Milum was selected in the third round of the draft out of West Virginia.
Veteran tight end Johnny Mundt joins the Jags from the Vikings.
They’re in One of the NFL’s Weaker Divisions
The AFC South is not a powerhouse. The Jaguars play two games each with the Texans, Colts, and Titans. At home, they play the Panthers, Chiefs, Seahawks, Rams, Chargers, and Jets. They travel to play the Bengals, 49ers, Raiders, Cardinals, and Broncos.
Jaguars Over/Under For Wins
The team will go as far as Lawrence takes them.
Will he be healthy?
If so, they have a deep and diverse offense with running backs Tank Bigsby and Travis Etienne Jr., and wide receivers Brian Thomas, Parker Washington, and Hunter.
On defense, they have star potential with 2022 first overall pick Travon Walker and Hunter.
Can they jump from four wins to eight in one year based on a new coach, their quarterback, and a two-way star? The oddsmakers are bullish on them, but this is more of a wait-and-see as Lawrence has not earned the benefit of the doubt that he’ll be the elite talent they expected when they took him first overall.
