The Packers Made Targeted Signings and Will Try To Win With What They Had
The Packers have one of the younger rosters in the league. Instead of making uber-aggressive moves in the offseason with veteran imports, they made understated acquisitions at reasonable prices.
Offensive guard Aaron Banks was signed away from the 49ers for four years and $77 million.
Cornerback Nate Hobbs, formerly of the Raiders, signed a four-year, $48 million contract.
They also signed receiver Mecole Hardman away from the Chiefs. He got a one-year deal, and he might be one of those players who’s only useful in KC, but will not be expected to be a star in Green Bay.
They selected receivers Matthew Golden and Savion Williams out of Texas and TCU, respectively, in the first and third rounds. The rest of the draft focused on the trenches, including their selection of offensive tackle Anthony Belton out of North Carolina State in the second round.
Protecting quarterback Jordan Love and opening lanes for running back Josh Jacobs is the focus.
The defense is mostly the same. They need a similar year in 2025 from free safety Xavier McKinney. He picked off 8 passes in 2024 and was an All-Pro.
They parted ways with cornerback Jaire Alexander and running back A.J. Dillon.
Jordan Love’s Continued Development Is Key
Replacing Aaron Rodgers is a tough gig, but Jordan Love is doing fine. In his first two seasons as Packers’ starting QB, he’s tossed 57 TD passes vs 22 picks. He’s led his team to the playoffs in both seasons. Now, the expectations are rising as the transition period is in the rearview mirror.
All the pieces are in place for him to take that next step. He’s got Jacobs in the backfield and a deep receiving corps with Romeo Dobbs, Jayden Reed, Christian Watson, Dontayvion Wicks, Golden, and Williams. At tight end, he has Tucker Kraft and Luke Musgrave.
Their 2025 Schedule Is Somewhat Difficult
Last season, the Packers’ six losses were to the Eagles, Vikings twice, Lions twice, and a final-game-of-the-season loss to the Bears in which Green Bay’s playoff position was already set.
They beat all the teams they were supposed to beat. But the only game that could have been considered an “upset” in any context was when they beat the Rams in Week 5. LA was struggling at that point and had not found its footing.
In 2025, they cannot repeat that, or they’re going to miss the playoffs. In their division, the NFC North, the Lions and Vikings will still be good, and the Bears cannot help but be better.
Along with the six games against those three teams, they host the Commanders, Bengals, Panthers, Eagles, and Ravens. They travel to play the Browns, Cowboys, Cardinals, Steelers (and Rodgers), Giants, and Broncos.
Packers Over/Under For Wins
There is a convincing argument to say that the Packers will step back from their 11 wins. But will it be to 9 or fewer? Head coach Matt LaFleur has never won fewer than 8 games, and that was in Rodgers’ final year when it was clear the team and its longtime centerpiece were set to part ways.
With their young core, solid offense, and Love’s development, it should be enough to get them to 10 wins and a likely playoff spot again.
