Casting a Wide QB Net
Deshaun Watson tore his Achilles in Week 7 last season. Jameis Winston replaced him. Dorian Thompson-Robinson and Bailey Zappe also saw time. Watson reinjured the Achilles, and there’s every chance he will never suit up for the Browns again.
In the current quarterback room, they have veteran Joe Flacco, former Steelers’ first-rounder Kenny Pickett, and the two quarterbacks they selected in the 2025 Draft, Dillon Gabriel from Oregon and Shedeur Sanders from Colorado.
Are any of these options the answer?
Flacco is 40 and had been inserted into the starting lineup by the Colts to replace struggling Anthony Richardson, but did not play much better than Richardson and was benched.
Pickett is on his third team in four years.
Gabriel was a third-round pick and put up big numbers in college at UCF, Oklahoma, and Oregon. He appears to be the guy the Browns wanted.
The Browns selected Sanders in the fifth round, and there was intense debate about how that came about. A prevailing belief is that the league asked owner Jimmy Haslam to draft him so the nonstop narrative and distraction would end. There are theories why Sanders fell so far.
Berry and Stefanski’s jobs are clearly on the line, so they will play whoever gives the team the best chance to win. If it’s Sanders, it’s Sanders.
Cleveland Has Pieces on Defense
The situation between the team and star defensive end Myles Garrett has quieted for the moment, but Garrett is understandably displeased with his career seemingly being wasted. He asked to be traded, but that has subsided for the moment.
The 6X Pro Bowler and 4X All-Pro is facing the prospect of a similar outcome as former teammate Joe Thomas, who spent 11 years as a Brown, made 10 Pro Bowls, was a 6X All-Pro, is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and never took the field in a playoff game.
Still, under defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, the Browns have great potential. They selected All-American defensive tackle Mason Graham fifth overall out of Michigan, and linebacker Carson Schwesinger from UCLA with the 33rd pick. Schwesinger led the FBS in solo tackles in 2024. They join Garrett and cornerback Denzel Ward.
The Browns also signed veteran defensive tackle Maliek Collins, signed away from the 49ers. Linebacker Joe Tryon-Shoyinka joins the Browns after spending four years with the Buccaneers.
The Offense Hinges on the QB
The Browns have a new offensive coordinator with Tommy Rees taking over for Ken Dorsey. Rees was the tight ends coach/pass game specialist in 2024. Before that, he was at Alabama as Nick Saban’s OC.
Running back Dylan Sampson was selected in the fourth round of the draft out of Tennessee. They also have Jerome Ford, who averaged 5.4 yards per attempt in 2024. David Njoku is a threat at tight end, and they have one of the league’s best receivers in Jerry Jeudy.
Regardless of these positives, the quarterback will dictate the future of the entire organization. Of the QBs on the roster, can one move the ball? Which will it be?
Their Division Is a Nightmare
In the AFC North, the Browns play the Ravens, Steelers, and Bengals twice each. In addition, they host the Packers, Vikings, Dolphins, 49ers, Titans, and Bills. They travel to play the Lions, Patriots, Jets, Raiders, and Bears.
Browns Over/Under For Wins
The likeliest scenario with the Browns’ quarterbacks is that Flacco will ask to be released by mid-August so he can pursue a job elsewhere, Pickett will win the starting job out of training camp, Gabriel will sit and watch, and the media will harass the organization non-stop to insert Sanders not for his ability to play, but for the attention he accrues.
By the end of the season, when the Browns are playing out the season, perhaps they will put Sanders in just to stay relevant and/or shut up the media, YouTube influencers, bloggers, and X commenters.
All signs point to another hellish season in Cleveland and a new regime in place for 2026.
