Junior Caminero (+1000)Jazz Chisholm Jr. (+1000)

Casual fans might not recognize many of the names, but there’s plenty of power here.

Oneil Cruz has 16 home runs, and the ball leaves his bat like it’s a Titleist. Cal Raleigh has blown past household names Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani to take over the MLB lead in homers with 38.

Brent Rooker didn’t become a full-time big leaguer until 2023, and he’s trapped in obscurity with the Athletics. He’s hit 89 home runs since then.

Matt Olson is a hometown favorite hoping to give Braves fans something to cheer about in a disastrous season. James Wood is an emerging star, and former Nationals’ GM Mike Rizzo acquiring him in the Juan Soto trade will be a fitting legacy for the fired head of baseball ops.

Hitting home runs in batting practice is far different from doing it in games. Those who have consistent and repeatable swings are likelier to win the derby.

Wood has that type of swing, and he is our pick to win the contest.

Cruz generates amazing bat speed. Being the odds-on favorite for the longest home run clearly stems from his batting practice exploits and exit velocity. He hit the hardest ball in baseball this season at 122.9.

However, that does not necessarily translate to Home Run Derby, especially given how he can fall into extended lulls.

Olson is accustomed to Truist Park and is in the top 5 in MLB for average exit velocity. He’s more consistent, and his home runs tend to be of the towering and distant variety. Olson is our pick for the longest home run in the derby.

This seems like a gimme bet, so it’s wise to be a little reticent before automatically believing someone will hit a ball beyond 479.5 feet. Still, with the number of balls that will be hit and the bashers taking part, this will be an easy over.
