- The Lakers were eliminated in the postseason’s first round in 5 games.
- The blockbuster trade for Luka Dončić did not go as well as expected.
- First year head coach JJ Redick may already be on the chopping block.
After being eliminated in the first round by the Timberwolves, the Lakers have some major decisions to make. LeBron needs to decide if he plans to play out the rest of his contract, the team needs to find a major fix for the lack of defense left by the Anthony Davis trade, and 1st-year coach JJ Redick’s future in LA must also be decided upon. We break down all the details.
Was the Trade a Failure?
It’s too early to determine if the blockbuster Luke Dončić-Anthony Davis trade was a failure or not for the Lakers, but let’s break down some of the immediate specifics. Surprisingly, Los Angeles hadn’t seen much statistical regression on the defensive side following the trade. That was until the playoffs started, when their lack of defense became a much more glaring issue.
That being said, it’s tough to link that to Davis’ departure specifically, rather than a variety of other factors. It was the perimeter defense that had the most issues against Minnesota, which is not Davis’ focus. That being said, they were also dominated on the boards, which he likely would have helped with. It’s hard to say if this current Lakers team is better than pre-trade.
On the other hand, Anthony Davis is now 32 years old and oft injured. His long-term presence on the Lakers was already uncertain. Luka is a top-5 superstar and still 26 years old. If they can address their defensive and rebounding issues in the offseason, LA should be in great shape.
What is JJ Redick’s Future?
It’s unlikely that the Lakers let their first-year coach go so soon, but the amount of talent he had cannot be questioned. A first-round exit reflects back on the coaching staff poorly, raising concerns that Redick’s inexperience could be holding the Lakers back. Will he stay next year?
What is LeBron’s Future?
Another big question mark revolves around LeBron’s future. He has already brought up that he is considering retiring, which is certainly not out the question for the 40-year-old. On the other hand, he’s signed through 2026 in LA and likely still desires to play with Bronny. A hometown return to Cleveland also seems likely at some point, though 2027 may be a much better bet.
