Race Preview

The G1 Hollywood Derby typically throws up a talented winner, and this year could be no different with a high-quality field of nine set to line up. Chad Brown will be aiming for a record-breaking victory in the race on Saturday, and he will saddle the likable Salamis.

The progressive Juddmonte colt has come up short in graded company to this point, most recently taking fifth when two lengths behind Troubleshooting in the G3 Bryan Station Stakes. Up in distance this weekend, and that could be the key to potential improvement.

Test Score is the most experienced runner in the field for the respected Graham Motion yard. The three-year-old was fourth in the G1 Nashville Derby in August, but that form still appears strong. He was impressive when beating the reappearing Maaz by a length at Santa Anita in the G2 Twilight Derby. Clear claims on his best form.

Noble Confessor also deserves plenty of respect for the Todd Pletcher yard this weekend. The three-year-old has won once from seven starts on the turf, but has finished second on four occasions. It seems as though he will relish this kind of test having been narrowly denied by Tiz Dashing in the G3 Hill Prince Stakes at the start of the month.

Hollywood Derby Picks

It has been a busy season for Test Score, and that could ensure that he is a weak favorite this weekend. Therefore, a chance is taken on the French-bred Maaz for trainer Michael McCarthy.

The three-year-old was only narrowly denied on his previous start, and likely needed that effort to get up to speed after moving from the United Kingdom. Should come on for that effort, and is taken to reverse the form.
