Mexico vs Canada Preview

Mexico Aiming To Reach Final Again

No nation has appeared in more Gold Cup finals than Mexico throughout the history of the competition. They have appeared in 13 finals since 1965, and have won the competition more times than anyone else. Mexico have won a record eleven times, including victories in 2011, 2015 and 2019 in the past ten years. They look excellent value to achieve success again this summer, and could set up a rematch of the final that they won two years ago with a victory over Canada.

Mexico have progressed nicely throughout the competition, but were held in their opener against Mexico. However, since then, they have won all three games that they have played, and are yet to concede a goal throughout the tournament. Mexico eased through to the semi-finals with a 3-0 victory over Honduras in the quarterfinals. Jonathan Dos Santos, Orbelin Pineda and Rogelio Funes Mori all scored in the first half in that clash.

Canada Looking To Reach Final For First Time In 10 Years

Canada have achieved success in the Gold Cup in the past, and currently boast an impressive 100% record in finals that they have reached. They have managed to make the final on two occasions, and won both Gold Cups in 1985 and 2000. However, it has been a long 21-year wait for another appearance in the final. This is an exciting new Canadian team, and they are certainly progressing every time that they take to the field. They have won three of the four games that they have played in the Gold Cup this year.

The only defeat that they suffered came in the final group stage game against USA. However, they bounced back to winning ways in the following game, as they eased through to this semi-final showdown with a 2-0 win against Costa Rica. Junior Hoillett fired Canada into the lead in the first 20 minutes of the game. Stephen Eustaquio made sure of the win with 20 minutes remaining for the Canadians.

Mexico vs Canada Prediction

The fixture between these nations promises to be a tense semi-final. Both sides will feel as though they come into the game with good momentum behind them, especially given how they performed in the quarterfinals. However, Canada have beaten Mexico on just three occasions in 26 meetings between the rivals. Mexico have won the last four games against Canada, and have conceded just once. For that reason, it should be Mexico playing in the Gold Cup final.
