- Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has helped lead the Thunder to the best record in the association.
- Victor Wembanyama has the San Antonio Spurs competing for one of the top spots in the Western Conference.
- The three-time MVP, Nikola Jokic, is making a case for his fourth trophy.
As we approach the home stretch of the season, it is a good time to start evaluating some of the league’s star players. With that in mind, here is a short list of players with the best odds of winning this year’s MVP award.
Best NBA MVP Odds: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (-800)
On the heels of winning the award last season, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander currently has the top odds for walking away with the MVP trophy for the second straight season.
His per-game averages include 31.7 points, 6.6 assists, and 4.5 rebounds. He is shooting a career-high 55.1 percent overall and 38.3 percent from deep, which is the second-highest conversion rate of his career.
In his most recent outing, the All-Star guard led the Thunder to a thrilling 129-126 victory against the Denver Nuggets and knocked down this back-breaking 3-point basket in the waning moments.
SGA finished the contest with 35 points, 15 assists, and nine rebounds. And it is also worth noting that he guided OKC to a win despite several key rotational players out of the lineup.
Furthermore, he has scored at least 20 points in 126 consecutive games and has been the steadying force for a Thunder team that has battled injuries most of the season.
Second Best NBA MVP Odds: Victor Wembanyama (+700)
The San Antonio Spurs are one of the top teams in the Western Conference. One of the biggest factors contributing to the team’s success is Victor Wembanyama.
In this third NBA season, the Spurs’ big man is averaging 23.9 points, 11.1 rebounds, and three blocks per contest. And because of his defensive effort, San Antonio has the seventh-best scoring defense and is ranked third in defensive rating.
His most recent body of work was an outing against the Houston Rockets on Mar. 8. In that game, Wembanyama was a force at both ends of the floor.
His final stat line included 29 points, eight rebounds, and four blocked shots. The ending result was a blowout 145-120 win over one of the best teams in the conference.
Coming into the season, the Spurs were expected to be a year away from being considered a legitimate title contender. But because of Wembanyama’s effort at both ends of the floor, this squad appears to be primed for a deep postseason run.
Third Best NBA MVP Odds: Nikola Jokic (+1000)
The fact that a three-time league MVP has the third-best odds demonstrates how great a race this is shaping up to be.
Nikola Jokic’s averages include 28.9 points, 12.5 rebounds, and an absurd 10.3 assists per outing. This marks the second straight season in which he is averaging a triple-double.
Additionally, the versatile center is shooting 57.5 percent from the field and 39.4 percent from beyond the arc on 4.8 attempts per game. In Denver’s recent matchup against the defending champs, Jokic finished with 32 points, 14 rebounds, and 13 assists.
True, he may not be able to overtake the top spot on this list. However, what is not debatable is that Jokic is a top-five player in today’s NBA.
