Sproat Needs Another Good Showing to Keep His Spot

Brewers righty Brandon Sproat was put on notice by manager Pat Murphy after a beating at the hands of the Astros on May 30. He surrendered 5 earned runs in 4.1 innings. It came amid a run of poor starts and Murphy dished out some tough love, saying straight out they're contending and they need more from Sproat.

In his next start against the Rockies, he was better, throwing 5 innings, allowing 7 hits, and 3 earned runs. It wasn't great, but it wasn't terrible, particularly in the light air of Colorado.

For the season, he has a 6.17 ERA, allowing 55 hits and 37 earned runs in 54 innings, walking 29 and striking out 54. He's given up 11 homers, which could be a problem in the homer-friendly park in Las Vegas.

Jake Bauers is having a brilliant season after several as a part-timer and a journeyman. He has an OPS above .900 and will likely make the AL All-Star team. Brice Turang's OPS is approaching .890 and he has double-digits in home runs and stolen bases. Jackson Chourio has an OPS of almost .850 after missing time due to injury early in the season. Christian Yelich has an OPS nearing .800.

No Brewer has ever faced Jack Perkins in MLB.

Perkins Gets His 2nd Start of 2026

Jack Perkins has been predominantly a multi-inning reliever for the A's this season. He made his first start against the Astros on June 5 and allowed 5 earned runs in 4 innings. For the season, he's been generally effective but for a few appearances when he gave up crooked numbers. His ERA of 6.19 is misleading.

In 32 innings, he's struck out 39 and walked 9, allowing 22 earned runs and 32 hits.

Shea Langeliers leads the team in homers and has an OPS approaching .900. Nick Kurtz still has the highest on-base percentage in baseball. Brent Rooker's average is hovering around .200, but he's finally hitting for some pop. Jeff McNeil is struggling in the .230s.

The only member of the A's who has faced Sproat is Jonah Heim. He's 1 for 2 with a double.

Brewers vs Athletics Pick

The A's will not use Perkins for more than 4 innings max, barring a massively low pitch count. For the Brewers with Sproat, they seem to be growing frustrated with him. In that ballpark, he's in jeopardy for giving up a lot of runs.

The A's will take this one in Las Vegas over the NL Central-leading Brewers in what will likely be another slugfest.
