One of the world’s most famous races is set for June 6, as the Derby is staged at Epsom. This race was first run in 1780, and it is Britain’s richest race of the season. The race also forms the second leg of the Triple Crown, following the 2,000 Guineas.

Aidan O’Brien’s dominant record in the race is hard to ignore, winning eleven editions since 2001. Benvenuto Cellini is the choice of Ryan Moore, and the three-year-old by Frankel has long-been listed as the Derby favorite. He won strikingly on his return to action when stepped up in trip, easily winning the G3 Chester Vase. However, an obvious concern would be the forecast, with Benvenuto Cellini’s most disappointing effort coming on softer ground when well beaten in the G1 Futurity Trophy last season.

Item represents the Andrew Balding yard this weekend, with Colin Keane booked to take the ride. The three-year-old by Frankel is unbeaten under rules, and he took his form to the next level when beating Action in the G2 Dante Stakes last month. Bred to excel over further, and makes a very strong case.

Pierre Bonnard has been one of the significant movers in the betting. The three-year-old for Aidan O’Brien was beaten a short head on his latest start by the re-opposing James J Braddock. However, the undulations of Epsom could suit him, and he has proven winning form on softer ground.

The aforementioned James J Braddock also holds a solid chance after beating Pierre Bonnard last time. He also has form on heavy ground and could still be improving. Maltese Cross adds extra intrigue to the contest for the William Haggas yard after winning the Lingfield Derby Trial.

Charlie Johnston-trained Ancient Egypt could also be an interesting player up in trip, as a son of Frankel. The three-year-old made an impressive return to action when landing the Listed Newmarket Stakes by two lengths from My Love Is King at the start of May.

Epsom Derby Picks

Plenty of horses have excellent claims this weekend, but I like Bay Of Brilliance at a bigger price for the Ralph Beckett team. The colt is by New Bay, who has produced graded winners over distances of a mile and further, and Bay Of Brilliance is one that should be set to deliver a peak performance on a big day.

He looked green when stepping up to a mile and three in the Lingfield Derby Trial, beaten just a neck by Maltese Cross. Connections were adamant before the race that he would come on for the return.

Has already won over further than a mile after landing wins at Redcar and Goodwood. Primed for a big run, and is largely overlooked at the prices.
