World Cup Group J Teams

Argentina

The reigning world champions will be the favored nation in the Group Winner betting for the World Cup. Argentina dominated the competition four years ago, but questions could be asked of their chances this summer, as an aging squad could leave them vulnerable. Lionel Messi is also a fitness concern.

The world champions were dominant in qualification, winning 12 of their 18 fixtures. Meanwhile, their momentum has continued this year with straightforward wins against lowly-ranked Mauritania and Zambia. A player that looks ready to step out of Messi’s shadow is Atletico Madrid star Julian Alvarez, who scored 18 goals in all competitions last season. 

Algeria

Vladimir Petkovic’s Algeria will be one of the leading contenders to upset the odds in Group J. The African nation will be playing in their fifth World Cup, with their best showing coming in 2014 when reaching the round of 16. Algeria cruised through qualification, winning eight of their ten fixtures.

However, questions could be asked of their recent form after crashing out in the quarterfinals at AFCON. Riyad Mahrez remains their most important player, but the 35-year-old scored just four goals in 27 matches in the Saudi Pro League last season.

Austria

The most interesting nation in Group J is Austria, managed by former Man United boss Ralf Rangnick. Das Team were eye-catching in qualification, winning six of their eight matches, and showing a strong defensive structure with just four goals conceded. Their momentum has continued this calendar year with wins recorded against Ghana and South Korea.

Few nations in Group J can boast a better selection of midfielders capable of controlling the tempo of a game, with Xaver Schlager, Nicolas Seiwald, and Marcel Sabitzer likely to be crucial to their chances. Austria are capable of upsetting the odds.

Jordan

History will be made at the 2026 World Cup, as Jordan will play at the global competition for the first time in their history. Jordan have been a nation on the rise in recent years, evident after finishing as the runners-up at the 2025 Arab Cup.

The Asian nation qualified after winning eight of their 16 matches. Credit should also be given for their consistent showings so far this year, playing out very respectable draws against Costa Rica and Nigeria. It is unlikely that they will qualify from Group J, but they should be competitive.

Argentina should top Group J, but their aging squad makes them vulnerable against the better teams in the competition. Austria look like the obvious nation to join the reigning champions in the next round.
